I thought about compiling my favorites awhile back. When I went through my list I was a bit surprised. Just because you purchase something in 2018 doesn’t mean it was made in 2018. Oops

Off the top of my head, the Aphex Twin Collapse EP is the only thing that comes to mind

Didn’t discover a lot of new stuff. Listening a lot to unknown youtubers and older music.
But I liked:

Aphex Twin - Collapse
Autechre - NTS Sessions
Jon Hopkins - Singularity
Daniel Avery - Song for alpha
Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch
Czarface /MF Doom - Czarface meets metal face
Young fast running man - Young Bird (my brother’s band  )

I bought Flaunt the Imperfection by China Crisis the other week and despite being years old is right up there with the best albums I’ve discovered this year. A fantastic record.

The Sleep album is fantastic. Most of my list above is less sludge/doomy but still in the stoner category.

I think this is hard as I’m also one who seems to be listening to stuff from all over the place either revisiting old stuff, rediscovering stuff i dismissed at the time, finding stuff that I was too young for… as well anything new I happened across. Anyway…

Autechre - NTS Sessions (another strong vote from me and I’m sure I’ll be enjoying this for years as there’s so much to consume)
SOPHIE - Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides
Jlin - Autobiography
Mika Vainio + Ryoji Ikeda + Alva Noto - Live 2002 (It was released this year so it counts!!)

I also got the recent Styrofoam, Objekt and Alias & Doseone albums which on early listening have the potential to make the cut.

Lastly, Collapse by Aphex Twin I have to confess to really enjoying more than anything since he went incommunicado but it feels a bit too safe and predictably AFX’y to include… but I have listened to it tonnes so perhaps I should just behave myself.

(I just wanted to say, it would be cool if people wrote down one separate list for stuff they’ve discovered this year as well, even though not released this year, could be interesting to hear)

If I had to pick just one, it might be “Field” from Shuttle358. It’s close to perfect.

I’m surprised you remember that given what I’d imagine living in a house with a member of Sleep might be like.

Jogging house - would is my choice for 2018… Also really enjoyed the soundtracks of " good time " and " you were never really here "… The breeders-all nerve is superb as well
