I love to hear my recordings from when I started a couple of years ago.
There is so much to learn out there and then every time you listen to your old stuff you realize more and more WHY it sounds crap and then, bit by bit, you hopefully start to improve.
People think you take a laptop, you press some buttons, there’s a four to the floor kick and off you go, the charts are waiting. Oh boy, was I wrong 
On topic:
For 1000, DT is a must I guess, then some multitimbral synth would be nice, but blofeld is too expensive. So I would say I’d go for the Microfreak, sounds decent I guess and very much sampling food for the DT.
Edit: after some thinking it would be hard to decide between DT/Microfreak and the MPC Live. Had one, didn’t really click, but that thing was a beast if you are willing to learn and accept its workflow.
