What’s your monthly spend on music gear

This ain’t about guilt. Think of it as a utility bill.

Annual spend / 12 months = your gas bill

gas bill

It’s clean energy. Good for your environment.

Bonus points if you recycle through FeeBay and / or Reverb.

I started playing piano on 15 May 2018 (I keep a piano diary), so that makes for 7 years and a little over a month (85 months). In that time, I’ve expanded into grooveboxes, loopers and video synthesis to augment my meager keyboard skills and enhance the grin factor.

My net spend (I’ve recycled a lot) is roughly $12,933 (I’m also one of those assholes who keeps a gear spend spreadsheet). Out of that total, I’ve got some stuff on FeeBay that might fetch around $1300, so let’s call it $11,620 that I’ve spent on gear that I love and use nearly every day. This includes around $2,900 for two video synthesizers and a projector + a pair of lighting trees with pars, spots and a lazer (those get more action at night and when I got a buzz on).

$11,620 / 85 months = $136.71 a month

That’s a small price to pay for a setup that’s fun as fuck to play with! Honestly, the OG Digitakt + OG Digitone and video synths make me spontaneously grin more than any of the gear I’ve got (I have to include my pair of Yamaha DBR10’s and the DXS12, without them I wouldn’t be able to hear squat.)

I don’t anticipate any major rotations of gear since I’ve kinda found my groove, but yeah, I do expect an occasional gas bill and am super grateful to be able to pay it.

It’s actually more of an investment than an expense.
