This thread is doing exactly what I hoped. Will be stealing many of these nuggets. And also….need more gear.
Stacking gives me joy. Start with Volume to 0. Midikeyboard cv to 1 analog synth tuned -2 octave basic sine and 24 db lowpass filter about 60hz, another analog synth bandpass sawwave or whatever with some modulation. Keyboards midi out to digitone, keyboards usb midi out to omnisphere and Uhe diva all stacked as one patch with a touch of lush reverb thru heat straight to monitors. Volume to position “are u sure mate?” And then hit some keys to listen The smile on my face on this moment is priceless. One of those moments that i am so proud of mankind that we achieved so much in technology.
Cool stuff! Me likes.
I’m gonna spend all day Saturday pinging my filters and trying some no input mixer experiments…
Well, I will start experimenting of distorting FM as much as I can. I haven’t been focussing on FM too much, but I will start now with a bang, with Kodamo EFM.
And see where it will bring me… NO smooth FM for me though
Blending samples and subtractive synthesis. for instance taking the attack from a sample and let the sustained part be traditional synthesis. Not fancy or anything, but an easy approach for semi-realistic sounds that I like a lot and find useful. Especially played with an expressive controller. I tend to use Prophet X in hardware or Roli Equator 2 in software for this.
Messing up with modular stuff and watching what happens. Yesterday I enjoyed to play with synced detuned vcos, modulating their frequency with lfo or adsr signals. Some days ago I played with switches, sequencing different euclidean trig patterns to the same envelope. Stuff like that…
Ever since I got my Eurorack I can’t stop putting derived audio envelopes into the rate of a free running LFO. It’s not synced, but still kind of reacts to the groove – and the LFO behavior changes yet again when you un-/mute stuff from the source audio ![]()
It all needs to dance together!
At the moment I’m enjoying using the SID8580 to make new sounds, so I’ve been exploring different C64 software, there is a surprising amount of cool stuff out there.
Also and related I”m always enjoying making new drum sounds using synths.
Analog FM is another current favourite, 2 sine or triangle oscillators and some mod sources can keep me happy for days.
I’ll second that
Ha! I came here to say “time stretching noisy ether samples into drones”
this year my favorite sound design technique is using someone else’s ready-made presets.
that simple
the only thing i edit is modulation matrix.
Lately I’m finding so much enjoyment in negative value pitch tracking of filters (so modulating filter frequency with pitch of your sequence). Wether in modular or for example in A4. Just turning the filter fm from positive to negative, changes a sequence or loop so much.
Haven’t yet modulated that modulation, but I’m sure it’ll sound cool. Come to think of it, I remember you can’t modulate pitch tracking of the filter with A4, right? So I should try it out on my small modular.
Simplicity. Recently, I’ve been backing off of complex routings and modulations in favor of basic, effective timbres. For instance, the unfiltered, imperfect beauty of a Moog 901 triangle with a bit of glide and some tape echo is pretty hard to beat. Likewise, a 2600 square wave with a plucky filter envelope almost always gets the job done.
Nothing simple about getting my hands on those buggers though, is there…
Sure. Giving a stranger all of your money is easy.
I don’t have any money and I’m scared of strangers.
Slight AM and or FM on pitch… I love the Wobblies
There’s a guy named “Uli” that would be all too willing to facilitate. ![]()

I like how you put his name in " ". Nice.
