Works and sounds great on 3DS with open_agb_firm, can map X/Y to Start/Select for a more imo comfortable control scheme. Unfortunately no way to do analog or midi sync on 3DS though, unless we can somehow mod it to use the IR LED to send midi out…
Is there a way for a handheld device to have midi in and out for a setup?
I got mine from Aliexpress
Thank you!
theres an arduino board and some things on tindie
NICE - how were you able to upload to the AP? (own one, but only play gba carts)
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, reliable gba flash cart?
I’ve messaged you so we don’t derail this too hard. I love using my analog pocket!
I don’t think GBAs are expensive, but the flash card costs about the same amount…
I knew my DS and R4 cart would come in handy again one day. Time to dust them off. And I’ve not fed my Nintendogs in years.
Himself has made a dedicated FMS thread now
ha, just seeing this now… posted in the dedicated thread about open_agb_firm and the 3DS. The github page notes sound aliasing issues under hardware limitations-- have you noticed any issues with FMS?
This might be in reference to the Game Boy PSG sound that’s integrated in the original GBA. It’s internally resampled for the PWM output and uses ZOH downsampling which can cause a lot of aliasing (of the PSG voices like the pulse) if the ratio is too large – the GBA’s native samplerate is 32768Hz and the PSG sound runs at a much higher rate, but you can tweak this relationship using the SOUNDBIAS register.
The cost is the Direct Sound/DMA sound bit depth vs samplerate, some games that rely more on PSG sounds will run at a higher setting for better resampling, but the most common setting is to just run it doubled (65 536) which gives you a bit depth of 8 (same as what the sound DMA produces anyway) but slightly better resampling of the PSG sound.
However this setting is ignored by the 3DS, so PSG sounds will alias quite a bit – the noise channel is however not as affected by this, the biggest difference in sound will be at higher rates in the narrow range where it reaches a high pitch.
TL;DR: AFAICT the DMA sound (which is what FMS uses for the FM synthesis tracks) is sounding fine on the 3DS. Noise channel might sound a little different
Definitely good enough for my needs, FM tracks sound amazing. The noise channel is not the best sounding thing, but not sure how it compares to other hardware.
Just want to say I’m delighted by this technical answer, and doubly so because I’m back in school and working with computer hardware and sampling/DSP and I actually understand what you’re talking about!
Thanks for chiming in on this. Excited to get some time to reopen the video walkthrough (which is great, thanks for that too) and work through it alongside the video.
I really love Dyad, thank you for creating it! Did the copy / paste workflow for whole patterns on Push make it into v1.1? I remember vaguely reading something about it but couldn’t find it in the (almost 2k
) posts here.
I went to download Tela and it’s saying I need to install rosetta first. Are there plans to update to a native m series version?
That’s just the installer, Tela runs natively on the ARM architecture. ![]()
(I should fix the installer at some point, not sure why it requires Rosetta 2 - but for the time being it doesn’t hurt to install it, occupies maybe ~100MB disk space and zero overhead for the os)
