I’ve got my eye on one of those partly because I have this ridiculous idea that “eventually I’ll own one of each kind of synth”. But also because it’s one of those synths that straddles that line between producing sounds that are pretty close to “real” instruments / sound sources and sounds that are clearly synthetic.
TBH I think that’s what really interests me about synths, from a timbral pov. It’s that ability to make you think you’re listening to one thing & then pull the rug out from under you.
Outside of a lottery win, or finding out I have a long-lost uncle who’s left me a fortune, I have no chance of buying a Moog One. But I am curious. What about the sequentials was it that you found wanting?
I had a Rev2 for a couple years and upgraded from that to the One. It was a great synth, but always a bit “stiff” for me. I’d spend half my time trying to get it to loosen up. Then I got an OB-6 and it was a bit too limiting for me. I always was short an LFO or an Envelope to be able to do what I really wanted. I know there are ways around that with MIDI and it’s a bit of an unfair comparison, but when you have something like a One or a S6 sitting a few feet away that can just do what you want without having to work around the synth the OB just didn’t get used (I sold it because I woke up one day and realized I hadn’t turned it on in 6 months). I know the P6 and suspect the P5 would end up in a similar place to the OB, the Trigon covers similar ground to my One, and I might give the 5-voice models a try but I’d have to demo them first and see how I do with the menus. So that’s the entire Sequential poly lineup spoken for.
I might be crazy, but I didn’t like the envelopes on either. It always felt to me like the AD and R stages didn’t do anything noticeable for the first half of the range and then after two more clicks they’d be too long. 3rd wave is made by an ex-Sequential man and I feel like the envelopes on that are the same way. I’m sure that’s just my taste, but it always bothered me.
The P5 Rev4 is very similar on the envelope stages. It bugs me too.
I had a Prophet’08 for a long time and now a Rev2, and I don’t have that problem with the envelope stages on those. I can always dial in the slope I want with ease.
I keep looking at the Trigon but I’m starting to think that the Muse might be better option (more voices, filters, LFOs, modulation etc.).
I’d get a TV, then you can make any mono into poly. First thing I did with TV when I got it was auto sampling of my monosynths. MS20 is so amazing in poly. I’ll go down the wavetable rabbit hole soon, and I’m sure that will yield excellent results.
If you want a great analog KPF, I’d get a Ise Nin. I’ve only scratched the surface with mine, and it is useable in a bunch of different situations.
If you want versatility, nothing beats a Summit if you want knob per function. I have a Prophet 10, Moog, and Oberheim sitting right next to mine, and while I LOVE each of them for their specific filters/character, the Summit is easily the most flexible due to voice count, mod options, and arguably some of the best FX on any synths (many folks say the reverb in particular is the best on any synth).
If you’re willing to sacrifice knob-per-function, the Redshift 6 may be the best sounding synth I’ve ever laid hands on and I’ve A/B’ed it in person against every flagship synth available on the current market.
also i am starting to hate on my minilogue xd module seeming to take up all the midrange from my perkons - any ideas to bin it and get something else? nord rack? minifreak? something that wont kill th eperkons?
Yeah - I can see that if you’d got something as all-encompassing as The One (don’t tell me you haven’t got a picture of Neo sat on it somewhere) that it will tend to make most other analog polys redundant unless they’re doing something very, very different and from the sound demos I’ve heard the S6 / E7 / P5 / P6 &c. &c. all offer slightly different colours of the same basic thing.
I know what you mean about envelopes: I feel that way about numerous synths where the designer’s made a parameter range choice and - to my ear - not quite nailed it.
