Gotharman.
To me its really the weirdest of the bunch.
Its weird with a big W.
Honorable mention to Monomachine and Waldorf M
I was going to suggest the 90’s emu stuff, sounds like you’re already on it though.
I have Odyssey and it’s the weirdest I have I think. I don’t think I was able to incorporate it into anything I made so far. But, that’s also due to the type of music I played around. As I go into more techno, I might be able to find a place for it.
Virus Ti can get pretty mental. Get some decent macros on the go and then slap a sequence together with an OT (or recently I’ve been getting the most weirdness out of it by using an M8 to sequence it)
Not out just yet but Torso’s S-4 looks like it can do some far-fetched sound mangling for FX & the likes
Nord Modular (any of them) easily fits the bill. Loads of SFX patches available. Think water falls, wet cavernous drippings, weather events, engines revving, animal noises, alien languages, steam engines etc.
Maybe you should also consider modular/Eurorack as well.
What about “additive synthesis” or “granular FX”. Here are some modules I love, particularly because they do what many mainstream synths can’t:
- Noise Engineering: Cursus Iteritas Percido (Fourier-, Wavelet-, Walsh-function generated waveforms). They have also less expensive modules with the same technology, but the CIP is a synth voice for live performance of its own right.
- XAOC Devices: Odessa (additive synthesis)
- Make Noise: Spectraphone (additive synthesis)
- Neuzeit Instruments: Warp (four additive voices in combination with a wavetable concept and beeing a complete synth. Just plug-in a MIDI keyboard and there you go)
- ADDAC: 112 Granular Processor
- Mutable Instruments: Clouds (granular) or one of the clones after MI stopped production, like from After-Later-Audio: Cumulus.
Modular of course or anything with a good mod matrix and no guardrails.
In software ID700. FM done a bit differently…
Okay I have done research into the different suggested models and I honestly wish I could buy all of them. They all seem to do weird in their own special way.
So far the suggested unit that stands out to me the most for my purposes is the Liven Texture lab. Utilizing granular synthesis seems like it can get suuuuuper weird and I like the idea that I can take organic sounds and manipulate them in interesting ways.
A good runner up is the hydrasynth. I really enjoyed the belle reid video that was posted.
Virus and Waldorf models seem super weird in the way that I am interested in. Thank you guys for all the amazing options. I’ll keep listening to demos and report back.
Metal Fetishist looks awesome! Definitely going to try that out.
Waldorf Q has a nice random patch and enough depth that you end up with some weird sfx for sure
Sounds like you have found a lot to play with already… but I had to mention my favorite… add it to an XP-60 or JV-1080 (not JV-880, where each patch has to be manually imported) after replacing the possibly-exploding capacitors on the card.

Arturia’s pigments is also weird
Kawai K5000, Ensoniq Fizmo.
I’m on the waiting list for this one. Looks fun!
STYLOPHONE THEREMIN WINS ‘BEST IN SHOW’ AT NAMM!
We had the best time at NAMM 2024.
It was great to see so many of you playing the Stylophone Theremin!
Oh… and the Theremin won an award!
The Blofeld does some crazy stuff. And you only need to press randomize a couple times until a new terrible monster sound is created.
Deleted colonoscopy scene from Lawnmower Man
That’s awesome, reminds me of the PreenFM2 randomize video (but no beat or fx)… the FM3 has the same functionality.
Opsix does weird the best of all my synths. Better than Microfreak and Neutron, which can get pretty weird too, but need effects for proper… effect.
