What is the best MIDI controller to control the 16 track levels live on the DT2?

Eggs a la Eddy!

I can recommend two UC4. Setup is really straightforward and MIDI merge works perfectly. Footprint is quite small for 16 faders. Of course, you could also go with one UC4 and use knobs for eg tracks 1-8 and faders for 9-16. Or use groups, as has been suggested, though that would be too confusing for me personally.

Can each fader be set to a different midi channel?

Edit: looks like it can… https://youtube.com/shorts/yQlOyN3NPUo?feature=shared

How about piecing something together via the Intech Studio system:

That system looks very cool. But it looks like USB and no midi port. Will it work with the DT2, as DT2 can’t act as host can it?

I think you’ll need their KNOT too to make it work:

Here is one of the Intech controllers in action with a Digitakt 2 (connected via the KNOT USB Host interface):

Yes, to use with hardware you need one of these:

  • A computer with a MIDI interface (some audio interfaces have this functionality).
  • The capability of the device to act as USB MIDI Host (eg. devices: 1010music Blackbox, monome norns, Korg Drumlogue etc.)
  • A dedicated USB MIDI Host device, like our very own Knot.

This must be true for the FaderFox stuff too as these only seem to have usb out on the back. How are you guys connecting the FaderFox stuff to the DT?

I might just buy a MIDI lead and give my MiniLab 3 a go, as this already has MIDI out on it and the 8 encoders and 4 faders will probably suffice for my anticipated needs.

Are there any other controllers recommended with MIDI built in?

All I want to do is control levels. I suppose I could just keep it simple and do this manually on the DT itself, one by one.

Faderfox UC4 and EC4 have TRS midi out on the back as well as USB.

Always best to try what you already own first.

Looks like you can set different midi channels on the minilab for the different knobs so you might be in luck.

Cool, where did you see this? I just asked on their forum.

I just looked at the manual for the online editor. My son has one but he’s just taken it to university so I can’t test it. :slightly_frowning_face:

You can do that on the Faderfoxes as well. Plus a lot of additional stuff like min and max values, signal type (eg MIDI CC, aftertouch), acceleration speed etc. Snd everything is pretty straightforward to setup and save. Worth taking a look in the manual. Small footprint as well.

You do know that the moment you switch to another pattern the controls will not line up? The Digis do not have relative control so values will jump as soon as you move a knob/fader. There is no way around this except for a very custom solution for a controller with endless encoders.

They can just use macros for mod wheel or breath controller (MIDI CC 1 and 2) and set them to amp volume. Also, DT II has performance kits, so no problem.

Macros create an offset which can be made pretty consistent across patterns, is that what you use? That’s actually a clever trick to get around the limitation.
I’m not familiar with performance kits, but if that works for what you want that’s great. Just wanted to make sure that you wouldn’t run into unforeseen issues before spending money on it.

Nice!!

I think I may need one!
