What is a "scratch pad row"

hello,

in the manual on side 44ff they write about a “scratch pad row”.
What does it mean ? Sorry I don’t understand it.

When you first turn it on you are using the scratch pad row. It is indicated by two underscores in the bottom left hand corner of the display. When you change patterns you will see the pattern flash to the right.

Press Function + Song/Edit and you enter the screen that allows you to edit chains and songs. Press Function and Chain/New to start a new chain.

I can’t remember the exact keystrokes and I am struggling to understand it myself so I can’t be more help than that at the moment.

In the tutorial Video he only uses Patterns.
How do I fill in a chain made for example with Pattern A1, A3,A7 ?
If I make a chain like this, can I give it a name ?
How can I insert it in a song ?

This is all (except the scratch pad row stuff ) explained around 20 minutes in the video. Give it time, go through it once and you’ll save a lot of time learning how to use the Rytm.

It might help if you understand that “scratch pad” is a term used by computer programmers to refer to an area of memory that is used for temporary storage which has no permanent effect. It even has its own Wikipedia entry.

As the manual says (page 44):

One song is always active and worked on.

So if you have not created any chains or songs then you will automatically be working in the scratch pad.

Then as the manual continues:

The intended purpose of the scratch pad row is to enable experimentation with chains and patterns without affecting already programmed song rows.

No you can’t name chains. You name songs when you save them. Songs are made up of chains. To see all chains press Function + Song/Edit at the same time.
Everything I know about navigating around the Song screen I learned from the tutorial.

I’ve seen the video two times. In the video he shows how to make chains and how to make songs. But he does not show how to put a chain into a song.

My idea was, to make a chain with A1, A3, A7. This is the intro.
A2, A2. A5, A9 is bridge
A6, A6, A6 is chorus etc…
Than I put the chains together to make a song

Maybe this doesn’t work and you have to create a song pattern by pattern. This is not a big problem, but I was confused, because the manual says: "Songs are essentially patterns and chains structured to form a long sequence."

haha, we wrote at the same time, so I didn’t read your last replay when I wrote.
thanx explaining the “scratch pad” - I’m not a computer programmer.
