What do you use for video?

First tip would be a big tall tripod then zoom in (or crop into shot in production).
Try recording the video with the tripod behind your gear so that camera is recording upside down then flip the video in production. Means you dont have to be literally sitting under a tripod whilst making your video

I use this camera https://mevo.com/

I use a dslr with a 50mm prime lense. I have to set it up at the other end of the room just to fit a few elektrons in shot. don’t use that

does some lovely shallow depth of field tho. :+1:t3:

I am assuming a webcam at 1920x1080 is enough for YouTube. Or does YouTube show 4k videos? Should I being use a DSLR?

All of Cuckoo’s videos I have seen are in 1080 and they look plenty clear…

Here is what I have so far using a Logitech C922:

I think I’ll put down a black tablecloth as well.

It doesn’t even come close to showing the screens… although I guess it is good enough for showing how I play the instruments and doing a recorded jam.

What are your thoughts on the question?

Should I record the audio separately from my mixer and sync up the video and audio separately later? Or I guess I can run in the audio directly and record it straight into the video file.

I am using Chew Broadcaster to do the recording and plan to live stream on Chew.TV

I’m lucky having a small shelf right on top of my gear table. I use iPhone 7 in 4k mode mounted on a small manfrotto tabletop tripod which is lying on one side on top of the shelf pressed with a heavy book. My table is with regulating height so I can play while standing and also move up and down depending on how much gear I want in the frame. I have a usb cable coming from the phone into a small macbook air and with the quicktime app you can monitor what’s going on on your phone via the laptop screen.
Sound is recorded separately and later synced in aftereffects along with animated title bumper I have as a template.

With phones is important you have lighten up your scene well as their sensors lack sensitivity, but I imagine with newer phones is better. I light up the small room with two philips hue lamps placed on the shelf and maxed on brightness so it reflects from the white ceiling and walls. I can also adjust the light temperature that way. Not ideal but it does the job. Later in post I do a tad of brightness correction and sharpen the whole frame.

This is a typical result I get:

Personally I think at this point the best reason to shoot in 4k currently is so you can zoom in on things and edit… sure you can make beautiful stuff for people with 4k monitors also but I’ve always found having higher res is mostly better for doing stuff in post.

I use my iPhone XS as camera (but really any iPhone from v5 to present will do).

As for audio, I use an old Behringer UCA-202 with an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter for stereo line audio input.

For tripod I use a cheap $15 phone camera tripod I got on Amazon.
To get that tripod overhead of the gear, I extend one foot longer than the other two, and tilt it over. I use ankle weights to anchor that one longer foot to the table, and keep the thing from tipping over onto my gear.

You also need a lot of light for shooting Elektrons, since the screens are so bright.
I recommend these affordable table photography lights.

This video shows what it looks like WITH the lights . And this video shows how the screen can be washed out WITHOUT the lights. The lights allow for even exposure of both the gear’s button/knob interface (so that the texts on the unit can be easily read), and the LCD screen.
