What do you use for video?

Your 50/1.4 is overkill for a youtube tutorial. Adding a Fisheye to a smartphone posted by Jeffe is a great creative tool. Personally, who cares if you have to resample just get it done. You could capture with a 8mm film app for additional quirkiness.

I never said I bought it to film my hands and gear faceplates  It’s an awesome lens by its own, and price on ebay is comparable to some floodlights mentioned earlier here. Just alternative solution in case you have some body to attach it to.

@CH3OH - Post a picture.

One thing that can work well is get a 500W or 1000W floodlight of the type they use at building sites and bounce that off your ceiling and/or wall to get some nice global light.
Tried nudging the clip with the left/right arrow keys? That has a 1 frame resolution (if I remember correctly).

Edit: Ha ha, I replied to the wrong post. It should’ve been in response to the iMovie sync post :joy:

no, that will not work, the ā€œnudgeā€ is huge…this was a change in the newer version…older versions allowed you to be more precise

of what?
Here is how video looks, if that’s what you’re asking:

It was pretty dark there, as you can see by burnt MnM display.

I think you’ll only get a mono signal with a cable like that since it was designed for use with a guitar and since it uses the microphone pre-amp in the iPhone…
Can confirm - it is a mono signal. I’ve never really cared about stereo signal for something that is gonna end up on vine, instagram, etc.

It is a very simple and basic setup, worth considering as it’s literally all you need. I was pretty impressed and I use it all the time.

Just an incredibly cheap option and requires only 1 cable vs multiple devices, power supplies, connectors, and more $.
Once you start getting more complex, factor in the camera connection kit (thats like $30 alone), and a powered hub might be necessary. I’ve tested quite a few of usb devices on many variations of i-devices, and needed the powered hub for most…it really got to be an ugly, cably mess for a ā€˜wireless’ device. ;]

Plenty of ways to skin this cat.

True, but that’s why I recommended the cheap Behringer interface. It works perfectly fine powered by the iPhone only, so there’s no need to throw a powered USB hub into the mix. You can literally just plug it in and go.

To sync audio + video, i use Ableton Live 8 and it works rather well.

The pain is to find the right output format : Apple one is Ok for this, leaves the video untouched if you want.

Just an update since I haven’t replied in this thread after starting it:

Got the 30 pin CCK for my iPhone 4S, but for whatever reason the phone chokes up when trying to record video and won’t get any sound from the mixer. No problems with my iPad, but as I said before that isn’t really an option. Bummer; I guess I’ll just wait until I upgrade to the iPhone 6 next month and get another lightening CCK for the phone.

Monoprice has a variant on the Gorillapod, so I’ll probably order that instead: http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=117&cp_id=11701&cs_id=1170101
They also have a ā€œone size fits allā€ clip, but it looks less substantial than the Glif, so I’ll probably have to plunk down the cash for that, but it’s not a big expense.

Thanks for all the great replies folks. Hopefully I’ll be able to start shooting some studio vids soon.

That is my experience too - really varies by model what devices will work. You could try using it with a powered hub - that fixed problems when I was testing.

And if you don’t want to wait, just get that cheap cable.

It should be noted the iPad4 in particular is incompatible with analog cables like that - WICKED feedback loop in those devices.

Bumping this rather old thread.

Thanks for posting this info. I had been recording low quality videos with my 2009 MBP’s iSight camera, but the line in audio quality was good.

I had an old UCA202 lying around that was formerly used for iPad optical audio output.
Happy to discover it works quite well with my iPhone 5 + CCK for stereo line input when HD video recording.

I’m still doing iphone video and post syncing H5 audio…kind of a pain really when I want just a quick capture no text or anything…I wouldn’t mind something cheap to get decent captured audio onto the iphone

the H5 will operate as an interface but I’ve found it spotty (based on how charged the battery is)

Griffin guitarconnect cable ($12) or ik iRig $13 - it really doesn’t get cheaper or simpler than that.

It will be mono is the only caveat.

I need stereo…not interesting in downgrading my current setup…would just be nice saving a step in post (syncing audio/video).

I use a combination of videop cams one fixed to the top of my monitor pointing down at my OT the other on a small tripod pointing forward and zoomed to grab the OT display.

Then I use a usb mic for any overdubs of the narrative.

I use sony vegas pro 13 as my editor and to do the rendering.

Again, you can connect the Behringer UCA202 ($29) directly to your iPhone using Apple’s Lightning to USB Camera Adapter ($29) to get a really decent stereo for video recording.

Question can the behringer card record audio in real time while the video camera is on the iPhone?

Yes, it just functions as the audio input instead of the built-in mic on your iPhone.

Indeed. And the UCA202 is what I’ve used for all my videos here:

It just works.
