What can you do with mega command? I have a non-uw mkii and wondering if it’s worth the DIY? I can probably have one assembled at JLC for $10 if the whole project is open source. It would just be my time sourcing the BOM. Worth it?
I’ve had an MD for about 4 years now. Love it and have gotten to know it very well. I purchased a MegaCommand this year and just getting around to diving in this past weekend.
A few observations:
– New MegaCommand (4.60) for the most part keeps most of the focus on the the MD itself. So you can learn the shortcuts so you don’t need to use the MegaC interface as much as you might think. Which is great.
– My favourite thing so far is the Chromatic mode. Turn it to Chromatic mode by pressing BANK + TRIG 8 and it turns whatever Track you’re on into Chromatic mode. So it treats the trig keys like a keybed. Or you can use an external controller and play the keys that way. But great for having say a bass track like I do on track 1 and then putting down a melody quickly. You can also choose Scale types like Major, Minor, Lyd, etc. and so on. There’s also a poly mode for grouping together different tracks as a poly voice.
– The microtuning is fantastic as well. Hold the trig key + press left or right and nudge the timing.
There’s so much more you can read about, but just having these items alone have made it worthwhile for me. Also having reverb and delay easily available on the MegaC hardware with knobs at the ready is very handy.
