I was admittedly kind of a hater. Admittedly still am, but trying to get better. I have noticed though that when I listen to music now, after making some, or attempting to make some, I don’t hate some of the songs that I used to hate as much. Some type of music driven empathy or maybe the songs weren’t as crappy as I had once thought? Maybe I’m getting soft.
Have any of you heard songs that you used to crap on, since you’ve been producing/creating music, that now sound a lot better? Any music that you are really shocked, almost embarrassed that you now like?
Any songs that were just ok that now seem like masterpieces?
That is often the case, but not always. If the individual has strong aversion then repeated exposure can strengthen that aversion. Repeated exposure will usually however change someone who is on the fence to a positive opinion or strengthen an already positive opinion.
I recently spent a night listening to Billie Eilish who I never liked at all before. Lots of underappreciated / subtle vocal harmonies in there. Sue me.
I remember as a kid shitting on Golf and being so bored with it while my dad had it on tv. In college I had a friend who convinced me to go play and I found the game to be challenging and the time with friends in the sun rewarding. I haven’t played in 15+ years, but when I am in a bar or see golf on TV I am transfixed at the beauty of the courses and the skill of the players.
It’s an appreciation I never had until I played and really began to understand just how impressive and skilled those players are.
Cheers to appreciating the effort, skill, and dedication of other musicians even if you dislike their sound.
A friend of mine compiled a list and she was in there for that very same reason. His name also happens to be Craig, assuming that isn’t some made up mantle.
Her brother is actually the predicate and they use a lot of vocal effects that are seldom used in general pop production.
…say what u want about billie…but all those whispering harmony vocal stacks are just mindblowing…when i first heard “bury a friend” i thought, well THAT’s. some great use of autotune and stuff…but ney ney…it’s all real takes…an addlib orchestra…
