can’t get enough of my protein, very high quality sound that fits right into a mix 
a no brainer for anyone wanting some hands on gritty waldorf wavetables. also spent some time with xenia after many hours with the protein and they complement each other well, xenia for crazy fm and filtering, and protein for deep diving away from the computer.
only wishes are for osc sync and a way to turn off lfo retrig on protein

How does the Protein compare to the Modal Argon8 in terms of sound?
I’m looking for a wavetable synth capable of a rich yet clean sound. In many demos of the Protein, I hear a lo-fi aliasing that bothers me a bit; the Argon8 seems capable of producing more crystalline sounds.
However, the Protein appears to have a bass power that the Argon8 lacks.
Has anyone here been able to compare these two synths?
I have both. Argon 8 yes much more crystalline and polished. Better reverb imo.
Protein much better basses, more character and grit.
Argon fits your description better IMO of clean yet rich.

After listening to several demos, I also thought the Argon8 had a much richer sound—until I caught a Twitch stream by that French YouTuber, where he was getting tones I’d never heard before. That said, the Protein’s sound does indeed seem darker than the Argon8’s…
The lo-fi grit and digital aliasing are defining characteristics of the Waldorf Microwave 1 synthesizer and the Protein. 
For clean sound definitely look elsewhere.

Does this get the types of pad sounds of the blofeld or is this basically the microwave plugin in hardware form? The microwave plugin is really good, so no hate there. Just curious if it’s a hybrid of a microwave, blofeld and maybe a q or if it’s more of a small microwave.
From the manual :
Sound synthesis: 2 oscillators with wavetables, based on the unique Microwave ASIC chip.

You can have two different wavetables, so better than the Microwave. It has different filters, which sound quite good. And it’s four part multitimbral.

Is it worth getting over the lower cost Waldorf software plugin? I may save up for a Waldorf M or Iridium for the extra features in spite of higher price tag.
Imo Protein sounds better than M or Iridium and I’ve owned all 3.
VST is worth it if you are recording either midi or audio into a DAW.
The hardware is nice though.

Matter of taste and approach in my view. I prefer sound ‘accessibility’ with Protein over e.g. Blofeld VST. I prefer the MW VST over M though, that one never inspired me during use. Iridium is everything together and more, too much and too pricey maybe.

I want to quickly come up with pleasant sounds. Protein does that for me. Also I like the onboard FX, really useable.
