Can you sum up so I don’t have to go to that place?
I read that nothing really new with the 1.01b2 -
I really hope the knobs do not suffer the same issue of the Blofeld and the M - I loved the Blofeld but the encoder issue was such a pain - even with the new firmware the encoders were buggy…
Couple of bug fixes, another legato mode, and a way to configure the oscillators to not scan over to the basic shapes off the top of my head
That’s the developer Rolf, you can freely sign up for the Protein beta with your email:
Between the quality control issues and the price markup for the states I just can’t support this company.
I’m not aware of any quality control issues on protein and I presume the markup are due to tariffs which aren’t the fault of the manufacturer
I’ve seen many quality control issues by elektron , Roland , moog etc … the list of companies with no issues is quite small .
But we all chose our red lines / who to support etc … there are many other manufacturers ( I assume you are in USA ) who aren’t being hit by tariffs or have stopped developing products to avoid higher costs altogether .wh Michigan synth works cancelled a recent product as costs increased 150% directly due to tariffs
Sorry … I don’t intend to turn this into a tariff discussion … I’m sure there’s a dedicated thread for this .
I have the Waldorf Microwave 1 plugin and it’s my favorite plugin. It’s really something special and I believe Waldorf should be commended for their fine work. I’d like it even more if I could run standalone it on my Mac.
If the Protein was the hardware version of the Microwave 1 plugin, USD $500 would be cheap, cheap, cheap for what it could do.
But it’s not. For better and for worse, it’s a cut down version of the ‘soul’ of it. That’s to be expected in a budget version of their much more upscale products such as the M.
It’s just that for me, the M is too much. Yet the Protein is too little. And if a Goldilocks version were ever created people would complain even more about the price!
It’s Core with a 7 minutes long vox sample, particle engine / grains plus a few extras:
I would not call it hopeless?
To me it is another approach of many to create a small dawless setup with DT2 or Maschine+ and a poly synth plus a mono synth. Protein sounds good and has a small footprint and some basic features can be directly controlled. And can be controlled via midi cc… But I am not sure if this is the final incarnation of my setup ![]()
It’s different but seems to have a few things not in the plugin (or MW 1) like the mod matrix, different wavetables in each oscillator, HP and “drive” filter types, various noise types, “flavour” (maybe a simplified equivalent of the de-calibration).
In the kindest way possible, could the granular discussion please be moved to the Iridium, Quantum, etc, threads given that this thread is for the Protein and it does not have granular?
Thank you in advance…
Different wavetables in each oscillator is a huge plus in my book. And if you layer two voices, you can have four different wavetables playing together…
Exactly my thinking, personally I went for Maschine+ paired with Analog Four and some small analog polys, Protein incoming! I don’t get the general hate for Maschine+ though, as a drum sampler it’s way more featured than the DT2, lock states are killer! Had the M, size and UI quirks made me let it go, but i loved the sound so Protein should get me close enough.
You can’t blame Waldorf for Trumponomics. The tarriffs are 100% a home-grown problem!
It’s not even about that, though he sucks too. When the Waldorf M was released it was $1000 more in the US than Europe. You can buy the Waldorf Protein from Thomann for $318 US or for $499 in local US stores. It’s a ripoff.
true and when I bought Perkons recently from Erica Synths in Latvia my tariff fee was $235. Fortunately the discounted price was still way less than normal even with the tariff fee. I really despise Trump as he ruined this country a second time.
I rather get Iridium even with higher cost or the M.
they aren’t based in the US are they though.
there’s lots of bad companies out there, perhaps direct your energy towards them rather than Waldorf, or better yet into something positive.
No as previous posters have informed, distribution to US is handled by a different company (Korg?)
