Fantastic tip, thank you! Ordered the 256GB right away, this will make it easier for me to switch the drive back and forth between the Iridium and my Mac Mini. That particular Samsung drive also seems to be the fastest drive available in that form factor (read speed of up to 400MB/s).
I’m not sure if the port on the iridum is USB 2.0, the USB B plug is. If it is, it will cap the speed.
They do say the USB port is faster than the SD card slot here though:
However, we do not recommend using an SD card for storage purposes. The USB interface is much better suited, as it is more reliable and faster. An SD card is only needed when restoring the factory settings (full init). In this case, an SD card and a USB device are required. Of course, it can be practical to use an SD card if a keyboard or other USB controller is already connected to the USB host interface.
My favorite patches on the factory ones were the Richard divine ones ! Really showed off what it could do ! Also had a lot of fun downloading tons of free wave tables like from serum packs and loading them up into the iridium also the fm kernels gets super powerful when you mod the heck out of it and use wavetables for the waveforms and mess with the different Fm modes.
That’s gunna be a game changer ! Thank you !
Digital former is so amazing just wanted to let you guys know ! Can get like 3 filter lfo modulations on huge bass and then more lfo and env loop points ! So many possibilities
Awesome, didn‘t even think about doing this, but of course! thank you for the inspiration, I‘m really blown away by the Iridium, it sounds great but foremost it is so much fun and FEELS so good to use and patch with. In another thread, I was lamenting the Behringer Pro-800‘s build quality (sent back by now), I bought that one around 1.5 weeks before the Iridium arrived…I mean obviously the difference in build quality is night and day, I‘m just amazed how much of a factor that feel element is in enjoying one synth over the other. I love what Waldorf have done here, it‘s a labour of love and mastery for sure.
Added a video where I explore RingMod on the Iridium. Go to 13m if you want to hear it, and skip the details
That price on the Iridium keyboard is incredible. It’s $3799 at Sweetwater. Is it real?
I’ve seen iridium keys on reverb for 1500+ that’s a crazy better deal and they were all mint or excellent ! Also wanna say I love my iridium and never going to sell it I really want to make some patch videos for YouTube because I’m making stuff way different than all the ambient and pad patch videos I’m working more on basses producers make in serum and bug messed up IDM seqences that sound like autechre and really messed up high frequency FM patches that just destroy your ears !
I’ll have to make some decent videos with m8 and OBs but I’ve made way better patches since these this was my first week on it !
I’m still hoping to get an Iridium down the line as it looks a sound design dream to use my own sample library with. In the meantime I have the (sort of) poor man’s version, an M and a 1010 Lemon drop (both of which I got wayyy under the price of an Iridium). If the granular is as good as the Lemon drop then it’ll be amazing.
I got mine from Juno Records for a good price when the dollar was strong in 2022. Duties were only 150US so I walked out the door for 2400US. The iridium keyboard is a workhorse and my main synth now. The keys are next level.
My rankings on the three Waldorfs I have :
Don’t forget the iridium has one of the most powerful FM synth engines I’ve ever used ahaha really love how you can throw wavetables through the kernals! And then change the FM types like AM / ring mode / phase Fm / and true FM
Really wish I waited to get the keys ! I don’t have any MpE controllers and I feel like I’m missing out always working hard to get some chord notes right on the pads just to check my patch ahaha / probably way easier to play a chord on the keyboard in seconds !
If you guys had the desktop unit like me what MPE controller would you buy to make it more like the keys ?
With Linnstrument you’ve got the most portable option, while with Osmose you’re closest to keys. If you just need polyAT, get a Hydrasynth Explorer as a controller because it is cheaper than the other two.
I can’t play keys ! But I prolly can learn I play stuff on my digitone all the time with just the pads ! And the iridium pads and my mpc pads ! The osmose looks great wish they made it just a controller I love the build ! Modular depth synthesis sounds nice on keys tho ! Linstrument gives you that acoustic instrument feel and then the kieth ones are a given ! Excited to see that new one come out ! Honestly might try and just trade mine for a keys but I already got a couple blemishes ahh ahaha got it for 1700 on reverb then I saw a keys for 1500$ and felt stupid ! But I don’t have space for keys just looking to the future when I have the space in a full room ! Ahaha this response for everyone who replied to me thank you ! I’m also looking to get the hapax sequencer to control all my gear and record mpe into it. Anyone here have the hapax and iridium ? Seems like you can set a definition file and really go to town !
You would have probably regretted getting the keys version absent any dedicated space. Space is absolutely key, no matter the price.
In your case, the Linnstrument 128 would be a great option. Even if you are looking at 1.1 k, it is a very space-concious and portable form factor. Your apparent lack of dedicated keyboard skills could even be an advantage to learn the Linnstrument. Us keyboardists are usually highly attracted by the rectangular and asymmetrical chessboard layout.
Alternatively, for the price of a meal, you can get Geoshred on the iPad and use that as a poor man’s MPE controller for your Iridium via BT or USB MIDI.
Not at all the same feel as the Linnstrument, but you will get (a small) Y axis and pitch bending via MPE, which is a start for you to experiment with the 4ths pads layout. Btw Linnstrument is a universal MIDI controller with an MPE capable arpeggiator and a non-MPE 64 step sequencer. Loads of features for the money with insta-love potential.
Yeah I actually really enjoy the spacing of the iridium after learning the knob mapping ! I love just laying in bed with it in my lap feels really good ! Plus the pads holds my M8 tracker ! Yeah linnstrument for sure is in my future!
