actually on the topic of compression, i read somewhere that if compressing material in the digital domain with any degree of bass element within the soundstage, an attack time of 18 milliseconds should be as fast as the compression effect should come on; any more would cause digital distortion of the bass frequencies.

A full cycle of a 60Mhz wave is around 18ms long. Faster attack times obviously have to cause havoc (aka distortion) on low frequencies like that. And it goes even more for release times. That’s why compressors have to be carefully dialed in depending on the material, not just run on full tilt like he criticises it in the article.
