Vocal Mangling

I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on the DT. I’m interested in the beats and mangling vocal samples with that granular synth function. Does anyone ever try this with good results?

I’m not sure there’s a granular synth function on the DT. It’s more a workaround as far as I know and while it can achieve some effects akin to a granular synth, I wouldn’t go so far as to call it that. Maybe I’m just not in the know, though.

in any case, the DT is awesome!

What is going on here at the 5:22 mark? Because it looks pretty awesome. And I’ve only seen the Max for Live Granulator pull this off.

Modulating the start position of the sample via lfo.

I think Elektron should just go ahead and proclaim that their Digitakt does granular synthesis. Because it basically does. And for me, this is a very appealing thing about the Digitakt.

Love the enthusiasm lol, but it really doesn’t. Granular synthesis chops up a sample into little parts (grains) and then can play them back simultaneously and at different tempo per grain. The DT can’t do any of that. All you see in those videos is someone manipulating the start / length parameters of a sample that’s being looped in playback. Then you can set an LFO to manipulate EITHER the start OR the length parameter (But not both) which contributes to the approximation of a granular synth sound.

Of course you could load the same sample multiple times on multiple tracks and set Start / Length / Loop points at different points for each sample + use each track’s LFO to modulate accordingly and then we’re approaching something that’s close to granular synthesis. But even then you’d be using the DT for something it’s not made for and not great for at all (hence: workaround) and you’d occupy all tracks in a way where you couldn’t use it for what it is actually great for.

I know what @pdxjona is getting at though.

For me personally I don’t really like Granular Synthesis that much as I tire quickly of the results. I find it gimmicky. But the Digitakt’s faux Granular thing has it’s appeal because It’s just a fun and quick approximation.
