I never will sell them, they are my life story. I’m not a materialistic kind of person, but somehow I really need them in my life. Note: when I was a teenager my family house burned down , i lost a lot of stuff (luckily my family was saved) and also a great part of my first records, maybe that has something to do with it. I didn’t care about loosing clothes or the furniture in my room, but my music was and still is my essence.
But it’s up to you and how you feel.
That’s a very interesting perspective you’re sharing, thank you!
When looking at my little itch from a philosophical perspective, I’d never claim the records I own or have owned are literally essential to me and my life. What I consider the essence would be my experiences, my memories (of music in this sense), my aging body, my breath.
Hiii @B_LD Rationally i follow your way of thinking 100 procent. I think it must feel liberating not feeling the need to have them physically around… But i feel very emotional about my collection for the reasons above I think, plus i still use them… anyway I wish i didn’t have those feelings…xxx good luck with it whatever your decision will be

Sell. No use getting attached to material things if you don’t have real use for them. Spend the money on something you enjoy now.
I fully understood what you were saying. Especially because it was quite a long way to let go of many “things” – and obviously I’m not 100% as confident (or comfortable with it) in all that radical sense as we all can see in this thread.
Triggering my gear-headedness, are you?
Does it spark joy ?
(yeah sorry, someone had to do it
)
Anyway my short answer is keep it.
I’m with @Alienna here, these are deeply related to experiences I had, people I knew, joys I felt… no amount of money can match those feelings I revive when browsing my collection.
I was obsessed with buying vinyl plus as a dj I loved digging for vinyl.
Built up over 10,000 records and would never sell a single one.
Years passed and they weren’t being used so I sold most of them. I’m firm believer if someone can get more joy and I don’t need something I’ll sell it.
Got few 100 left and not sure if I’ll sell them but potentially I could any day
Ps. you will be ok whatever the outcome is,
I hope this makes sense too. Thank you for bringing up this topic
Ps. It reminds me : I once followed a course in Stoicism, not because i want to be a stoic but just to explore …There was one exercise in particular that can help you: Imagine a scenario in which you will actually sell or maybe loose - your records in this case. Imagine and try to make the vision as realistic possible, for example imagine that a buyer is at your house giving you the money and putting all your records in their car, driving away…etc. Do you feel upset or relieved?
sorry if this makes it more difficult
Yes indeed thank you for putting in into better words, the connection is irreplaceable and not for sale…
i know that there are records in my collection that i’ll never listen to again while i’m alive. however i don’t know which ones they are, so i’m keeping them all just in case…
Not at all! Once something is out the house there’s usually great relief and only rarely, very very rarely I regret. I have to admit I like the process of selling and someone else being joyful with things I once was very joyful with.
That too is a beautiful state of mind, respect
I’m the same. When collecting I bought a lot of other collectors and they would say they were glad to sell to someone who will give their loved possessions a good home and enjoy them. That’s how I see selling mine.
Plus I put the money to new memories like going to new York, visiting family and buying new music gear.
The 400 or so I have left are the most difficult to say goodbye to though. I won’t sell them if I don’t want to but also if someone wants certain ones I’m always tempted to sell and buy something else I desire.
I don’t have much disposable income so buying something often means selling something
I think when I retire I’ll get a nice setup and buy vinyl again. Have a relaxed listening area
Plus I have my 1210s and mixer still with a load of battle records for when I want to do some bad scratching
kind of annoyed that i sold my pristine SL1210 Mk5 G’s. but i got significantly more than i paid for them new at least! i’m strictly a single turntable, belt-drive man these days…
Oh well, I think it would be very tough to sell the last of my 1210s. I eventually upgraded it with a proper pickup and now even jazz records from 50 years ago play nicely. This is probably the only piece of gear that is to stay forever - if there’s any such thing.
Edit: no more nasty scratching and backspinning though.
Very kind of you!
That looks like my living room only tidier…
I had similar feelings about 4 or 5 years ago and I ultimately kept a couple of squares in the Ikea storage cubes worth of them that I’ve got a particular attachment to. Ultimately I even got rid of my record player as I just never listened to them and have it all digitally anyway.
One thing I did was to get some of those little wooden shelves from Etsy that you can put the records on and they become rotating art for my wall. These -> Pack of 2 X Solid Ash Vinyl Record Display Shelves Vinyl | Etsy UK
