I recently just finish FF9 over the course of a month due to just having a job. I’m what you would call a binge gamer. When I start games, I just binge day and night none stop till I finish it. While I could get away with this while I was a Uni student you find out real fast how little time you have when 8am to 5pm is no longer your free time. At first while it was annoying to chip away bit by bit, I feel like the story and themes had more time to stew and cook, even if gameplay flow suffered. Anyone with similar experiences?

I definitely have similar experiences. As I get older and have less time I definitely prefer story based games that have a clearly defined end. Don’t get me wrong, I still like other types as well but it’s easier to allow myself to play when it’s not open ended.
But in terms of being forced to spend longer with the story because it’s more spread out, that reminds me a bit of watching tv as a kid when you had to wait week to week for the next episode. Spending 2-3 months in the world of a show vs binging it over a couple of days really colours my memories of particular times of life.
I think this was a bit the same with 90s adventure games when you didn’t have access to hints - you had to persist, take a break, come back, start over etc.

I am a binge gamer too.
My family is comprehensive because I only play a big game one month every three years, but during this month I’m completely immersed in the universe.
I aldo like short games for I can be immersed a whole weekend and close the door behind me. Something like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was perfect. What a ride.
So yeah, I’m all for stories and strong ambience, the kind that leaves you with vivid memories.

i do miss Binge gaming, last time was maybe 20 years ago…
My absolute favorite binge session was FF7. it was a weird phase in my life because i was watching Neon Genesis Evangelion as well and that combo really messed me up mentally.
There was definetly some crying involved with ff7.
Honestly i think i enjoy binge gaming more then the fragmentated play sessions.
