Hi Guys!
I will be running these two with Ableton on a mac. I also have an SPL crimson i’d be using for my main outs to adam satellites and a sub 10. My brain is a bit overloaded at the moment - I wondered if anyone knows of any staple extras that will compliment this? This is still not set up as the Vermona has still not been delivered so i’m not too sure of how exactly i will do it? On top i also have a Keystep with midi, and a montribe. I know some basics I’ve learned when buying the gear but not much at depth.
Really appreciate your responses!!
Rich
I don’t understand what you are asking. What do you need to setup?
Sorry… nothing is set up. I need to figure out all routings and settings
Cheers!
I think it’d be easier if you listed what gear you currently have and what kind of routings and setup you need, it’s too vague as it is right now. What I can grasp from your post is that you have:
For synths/playing:
- Analog Rytm MK2
- Vermona PERFourMER
- Korg Monotribe
- Arturia Keystep
For audio:
- SPL Crimson audio interface
- Adam Audio monitors + sub
Am I correct? I will continue the post assuming this is what you will have (as the Vermona hasn’t arrived yet).
First, audio routing: your interface only has 4 inputs so you will have to be creative with the audio INs from the synths, you can either plug the Perfourmer into the AR2 or the Monotribe, I’d suggest plugging the Perfourmer so you get to process its sound with the AR2 compressor, so in that you’d have:
- Perfourmer Stereo Outs -> AR2 Ext IN
- AR2 Stereo Outs -> 2x Crimson INs
This leaves 2 INs from the Crimson for the Monotribe so plug that in.
Now for MIDI, you probably want to use the Keystep to control the Perfourmer and Monotribe at least, right? If so:
- Keystep MIDI OUT -> Perfourmer MIDI IN
- Perfourmer MIDI THRU -> Monotribe MIDI IN
And for last you need to decide what’s gonna be your master clock, I don’t have much experience using Ableton as a master clock (and I believe I’ve read it’s a quite unstable clock) so you might want to use the AR2 as the master clock, if so I believe it will work setting up the Keystep to get MIDI clock as source and:
- AR2 MIDI OUT -> Keystep MIDI IN
I’m unsure if you need to setup something on Arturia’s MIDI Control Center so the Keystep passes thru MIDI clock, I don’t think it’s needed but keep that in mind if it doesn’t work simply connecting the cables and pressing “Play” on the AR2.
Wow this is amazing. I’ve been further researching this morning to see about adding a midi box. I’m just rushing out but will analyse what you said asap. Vermona is arriving in next 2-3 days. THANKS VICTOR
Thanks for the Edit, victor!
Precautionary words from a self appointed sage. Fight any urges that may rise telling you to buy more. Ableton and those two powerhouse pieces of kit will cover just about everything. Select samples would be the only thing I’d suggest. If you feel that something is missing, dig deeper into what you have. Adding more to the mix will only dilute your productivity.
100% I’m really fighting this urge at this second online haha. The only thing I’m teetering on is another /better hardware sequencer so i cut down screen time !?
That’s actually a good one. May I suggest a DT? One of my all time favorite boxes. I dare say it’s all I’d ever need if it came down to it. Damn you got me breaking character now.
my current setup is a Perfourmer, an AR MK II, a digitakt, and a Keystep. its a great little setup, i’m way more prolific with it than with a larger, more complex setup.
SWEET
I will probably start with those exact 3 tomorrow when my Perfourmer arrives.
Were there any niggles setting up that you can advise on?
Thanks doug !
Well, I’m using a mixer (Soundcraft Signature 12), so for audio it’s a pretty simple setup. Everything is going into the mixer, but bring 2 aux channels from the mixer back into the Digitakt for sampling purposes.
For MIDI I’m using a MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru (in order to split the MIDI signal).
Keystep OUT to Digitakt IN.
Digitakt OUT to Quadra Thru IN.
Quadra Thru outs (4) to Perfourmer, Rytm, and 2 extra if I want to quickly integrate something else).
The setup could be done without the quadra thru by using the either the DT or the Rytm’s thru ports. But I find this to be a bit cleaner and easier to add/subtract gear.
That’s such a simple setup compared to some people on here, but about two years ago I had no idea how to route anything and this would have sounded like complete gibberish to me.
Congrats on the Vermona. It has become my favorite synth.
Brilliant ! Doug, i thought DT and AR were very similar how do you operate them together to get results you are looking for?
Very nice point about Quadra, i was lookimg at this this last week and thought it seemed a bit pointless when they can be connected without, but now it makes much more sense re being able to integrate other kit quickly
Vermona just arrived
Hey doug
just connecting vermona to Keystep. Notes are playing but no joy with arp/seq? Been messing with Midi Control centre… do you have any advice? THANks doug. rich
hey @Rich1, the DT and AR go really well together. I like using the AR as a drum machine and also I love the duel VCO for dirty basses. It gets dirtier than the Vermona does, so it’s good to have around. The DT I use for stabs, other percussion, and creative sampling. The Vermona does the heavy lifting. God, I want another one just in case they stop making them.
Regarding your question: are you talking about the MIDI control center Arturia app? I am sequencing the Vermona from the DT, so I’m sure how to take advantage of the Keystep arp. I wish i did. Good luck. And enjoy the gear!!
Did you press “Play” button with the clock switch on the back set to Internal ?
where did you find a vermona? they are worldwide out of stock right now haha
No… i had on mid switchi ! will try that. I thought internal was for CV gate? cheers !!
Yeah was hard to find one… i waited a few weeks for this. I bet there will be more in 2/3 months so get on the waiting list / pay a small deposit
