Using external keyboard for A4 MK1

I have connected my A4 and Rytm with my MPC Live. By switching MIDI Ch I am able to play my A4 via external keyboard > MPC Live > A4 but unfortunately A4 doesn´t accept my external keyboard if I want to programm patterns by recording in real time as well as step sequencing.
Isn´t that possible or have I overlooked a special midi setting for this?

Perhaps you have overlooked the section on auto channel in the manual.
