Using DT as preset machine for Roland boutique

Thinking about a setup where a Roland boutique is stored away so that it doesn’t take up space but sends nice sounds to my DT II. Idea is to program patches via CC‘s and then play around with some of these on DT. It would require for a pattern to send all CC‘s to the boutique at once at a button press or something. Would that be possible with DT II? I know I could save patches on the boutique but the idea is that it should feel like DT II had a synth engine and all the controls are there.

I’m thinking that the range of values controllable by midi cc would probably be ok when used performatively, but when you start fine tuning for patches or whatever, CC value range will be insufficient in their resolution to truly land on the values that you may want them to.

I don’t know this for a fact, but I would assume that the relative value range of the boutique parameters when controlled internally covers a lot more “in between the lines” such as it were, so that each CC value may represent a jump of X number of increments on the native engine.

You’d really have to try it out, but my guess is that initially you’d be like “oh cool this works!” and then supplementally you’d feel like you were adjusting parameters with heavy gloves on and would give up on it.

Maybe also some issues with value jumps if you used multiple patterns, but again, I think you’d have to try it.

It’s a cool idea for sure.

Thanks, I guess you’re right and it’s not worth the trouble!

You could try it out though… I mean, I’m not saying it’s unusable, but it might be frustrating, that’s all.

Usually when I get super focused on sound design, I even get frustrated with the sensitivity of encoders that are doing their job correctly, so I’m just assuming that if you’re searching for a sound and missing it because what you want is actually between 2 incremental midi values then it’s gonna be annoying.

You have at least one boutique though, don’t you? I think if the boutique has NRPN in the midi implementation chart, then you would have better luck using one of your faderfox controllers set up for NRPN and you would get a lot better resolution, it just wouldn’t be the same awesomeness of having a digitakt with a built-in synth :frowning:

Also, it would take up more space and if I’m getting the gist of your idea, it’s to sort of compact things into a small footprint for that particular setup. Unfortunately, adding the faderfox would probably defeat the purpose of what you’re trying to do.

Exactly my thoughts. I also considered your FF idea but concluded it would divert from the original idea: having a DT with all my favorite drum sounds plus some kind of built in Roland synth engine. Might still try it with my 01a, thanks!
