USB class compliance question Elektron Gear

Elektronauts,

I 'm wondering the following. Did anyone went all out connecting Elektron machines with exclusively USB cables to for an example a MPC or any class compliant device for audio processing and route the processed audio back to RYTM to pass to the analog compressor to the mains?
Any insight or video reference would be great.

  • Sound quality
  • Ease of use
  • Latency or round trip issues
  • Gimmick or truly a professional solution
  • Why I don’t see gig-bags with only usb-cables and only one Elektron unit going analog-out to a mixer or PA system…
  • Class compliant digital effects

It doesn’t work this way. They are class compliant devices but not hosts, and you would need a host for it to work as described. Not to mention, IIRC audio coming through USB doesn’t get processed by the effects sections, unless you’re using Analog Heat - so no compressor, no reverb, no delay, no chorus.

Ok thanks for reacting. I think I have the usb-topology all wrong in my head regarding its capabilities. I need to read a bit more in to it.

MPC is class compliant and a host and can receive USB audio, but no, unfortunately you can’t do what you want.

But you can use a class compliant Elektron device as an audio interface / usb audio source to send audio into MPC’s recorder.

The short answer is that there isn’t an easy digital point-to-point audio/MIDI networking option out there.

USB-C adds confusion with what looks like a single plug and cable but turns out to be a bewildering array of sub standards.

Audio over 1/4” analog and MIDI over DIN or 3.5mm TRS is the way to go if you want things to just work.

Ok. Thanks for pointing that out.

To reach RYTM, it would need a standard audio configuration (1/4 inch) from the MPC (or other audio source) out to the RYTM input.

Maybe one day we’ll get USB audio both ways (and host capability) from new Elektron devices, that way you could also use a class compliant USB midi keyboard straight into Elektron which currently you can’t. That would also be a huge benefit with a lot of smaller controllers/control surfaces being USB only right now…
