Rushing on a soundcheck, forgot my psu 250 kilometers away, I have to find an alternative. Since 6V is uncommon, the options I look at are 5 and 12V
Will it work, has anyone had experience with this? One time only, so it’s a quick fix, not a permanent solution.
Thanks!
Universal power supplies with variable output voltage are quite common and come with a variety of adapter plugs EDIT: but get a manually adjustable one, not one of those universal automatic laptop adapters
Dont ! It will damage your OT. (Using higher voltages)
How about the lower one?
Can’t find other than 5v here and now
I wouldn’t want to give you any advice that might damage your unit or corrupt your data. I’m afraid you’re on your own here… 5V that provides sufficient current and has the correct polarity is less dangerous than 12V: absolutely do never ever attempt 12V. That’s all I can say. But the risk of damage or malfunction is high in any case. EDIT: I noticed that sometimes people from Elektron chime in, you might try to ping them, who knows…
My OT mk1 has a 12v PSU @2.25Amps. I got it used, but i think it might be a later one.
For the avoidance of confusion (primarily for future searchers) wrt the above^, the Mk2 does now run with a 12v power supply and the Mk1 is meant to run on 6v
There are anecdotal tales from time to time of users using the wrong Elektron psu brick from device X for device Y and so on - There are some who weren’t so lucky iirc - possibly from the overvoltage
I wouldn’t read one post as a green light on this, unless it was endorsed by Elektron
I’d double check your own situation through support asap @charbot - if you’ve really got a (black) Mk1 unit with a Mk2 supply your luck could run out any minute - i wouldn’t risk continuing like that without some proof it’s safe (assuming it’s actually sending 12v)
As a sidenote, I find it annoying that the Elektron devices (and I have four of them with all diffferent voltage requirements) has the same physical shape of plugs, so it’s easy to use them incorrectly and dangerously.
Btw, now that we are at it, it is stated for example “The adapter is not safety grounded and may only be used indoors.”. What does that mean in practice? What I mean is that there are many outdoors music festivals, you aren’t supposed to use them? So if you depend on Elektron devices for your live performance (which is what Elektrons shine at), than you theoretically should not perform on these events…? Seems like an unrealistic expectation. How to reconcile this contradiction?
Pro Tip: write on the brick which box the PSU belongs too. That way no mistakes are made.
No- i got mine before the MK2s were released and am fairly certain that it is the “factory” PSU. I remember being alarmed when I discovered that most (other) OTs came with a 6v PSU, but I also remember reading somewhere that Elektron made the change towards the end of MK1 production. Im not sure if that reflect internal circuitry changes or just a way to simplify production costs, as most of the other boxes were using 12v at that time. I do suspect that either way, the OT is actually running on 5v internally and what ever DC voltage is applied (6v or 12V) gets regulated down after the PSU jack.
…just a theory.
…or even a label on the cable that goes to the machine
…and as already mentioned, i wouldn’t go with lower or higher voltage either…
Amperage over doesnt matter. The box draws what it needs. Amperage under is bad.
Voltage over is bad. Slightly over is less bad, machine will get hot…and will probably end up badly. Voltage under wont damage, but the box will either not werk or behave poorly.
FWIW I had an issue with an OT PSU once. Elektron confirmed that I could use the AR MKI PSU (12v) on my OT but it shouldn’t be a permanent thing. I used it for one show and it was fine.
There you are. Probably engineered out !
Thanks everyone!
Ended up buying a modular psu with 6v 5a at the end. On the soundcheck everything went fine, hope the gig will be OK too.
