So as our female representative, do you get gas like us boys ?

I dunnoā€¦ I think that in THEORY electronic music should be like the most balanced gender-wise, due to how itā€™s usually created. You never need to meet anybody, donā€™t need to form a band, no need to train for years first to know how to play an instrument manually, all you need is a laptop, headphones and a DAW, which can be bought online without entering a specialist store. Thereā€™s absolutely nothing stopping women from doing that en masse, itā€™s so easy to start. But in reality it isnā€™t so and I got no idea why that is. I often think about the subject, but havenā€™t found an answer that would please me.

I can imagine that ie. in rock music itā€™s much harder to start and you need to be a much more social, outgoing, brave person who can take direct, honest critique face to face, tolerate the rockā€™nā€™roll lifestyle etc. It can be hard for most women to enter that world, even nowadays.

Unfortunately yes. :grimacing: Iā€™m always thinking about sneaking gear in but he would notice. Studio in a livingroom kind of a setupā€¦

What barfunkel said is true, in that sense it should be easy. If youre comfortable with google

And I dont find the techno scene macho, at least here in Finland. More like interesting introvert ppl gathering around good music! Again a little bit of generalisation.

I have the same GAS as every guy here (yes I am a woman) but sneaking in is not really a problem here. He sees everything and I am showing new stuff, but he is not aware of the amount of money I paid for it. He thinks I am nuts to have all that gear

I dont have problems that there are more men into electronic music making really. I think there are a lot of girls/women who like to make music. And for me a guy or a girl is the same.

These threads always make me happy that Iā€™m single. I value companionship, but I never have to sacrifice money or time or consider anyone else when Iā€™m making choices. Iā€™d much prefer a partner who understood these things, but my experience has always been that Iā€™m sacrificing those things, so give me solitude and freedom.

Yeah I tend to forget about genders too.

As ive said i also do bodybuilding and there is no more ā€˜machoā€™ passtime than that!! Although its losing that 80ā€™s action film machismo it seems. Thankfully!!! However a large contingent of people at my gym ( its a real spit n sawdust kinda place ) are female. Most are into the fitness/bikini category but theres also lots of female bodybuilders who train like trojans, easily as intensely as the men, and also i know a few female strength athletes there. I dont know many electronic musicisns who bodybuild, unless anyone here does? I have to say i dont think techno has a macho image personally - though i understand what you mean. Would love to hear more female perspectivesā€¦

I think guys are just more into gadgets, generally speaking. Plenty of women in the actual techno and dance scene at events, enjoying the music.

Yes definately more gadget oriented!! Thats a very good point. Maybe the technical minutea is off putting - im one who would somedays spend hours getting just one sound right ( through luck, my programming skills are unfortunately not the best!! ) then other days just want to get on with making music or working around a theme, in which case too much twiddling can send me down a rabbit holeā€¦ Which is part of the joy too. But im sure theres plenty of ladies who love this also. Sai has a point i guess, its a societal thing. Though here in the UK it seems lots of sports and stuff have womens leagues and professional teams now too. About time id sayā€¦ But still, as has been said, women in music tend to gravitate to vocal or vocal and acoustic accompaniment in my area. It is what it is i guess.

SAI making very tasty and instrumental electronic music, i invite you guys to listening a bit

Wowā€¦ Just checked some of Saiā€™s work. Exellent stuff.

Maybe she never related with the idea of ā€œmotifā€™s as songsā€, as is often the case in electronic music? Some people need their ABBACA pop form to digest stuff as music

Iā€™ve always idolized and had the utmost respect for artists like DJ Rap and Kelli Hand. They hold their own and put out killer tracks with 0FAX wrt to gender issues (well ok DJ Rap has gone beyond this but when she started she had this)

I mean, Iā€™m not opposing the way people like Hanin Elias, Peaches and Grimes put the femme angle on their music either, but I dunno, I always respect it more when an artist is only about the music, if that makes any sense.

And in practice, probably also true that there are many women in electronic music.

The need to participate in online gear-obsessed clubs, less so.

I doubt the GAS gear collector over user psychology is as prevelant, my friends that produce actuallyā€¦ produce? Versus posting signature files of all the stuff they own.
