Ultimate Bassline Weapon

Not like I’m looking for something, but would be nice to find out what’s your favourite tool for creating rich sounding, massive analog basslines. Of course many mono synths can do this, but I’m talking about your subjective experience.

On my side:
Original TB303 and RE303 - still solid and useful especially with external fx.

Moog DFAM - can be crazy for massive basses, very unpredictable, nice as a pair with 303 (with cv outs).

Prophet 6 - surprisingly nice for basslines, sequencer is simple but useful.

I thought that Dreadbox Medusa will be killer bass tool, but after using it for a while I think it’s just ok (better for drones, fx, and pseudo poly patterns ). Seems like Typhon will be much better in this field.

Regret selling Roland SH2 a bit, just as massive and into face sounding as possible. Maybe get it again one day since nothing can replace this feeling.

Moog Minitaur
AR Dual VCO has been a lot of fun lately
Moog Slim Phatty
And I swear I love some basses I’ve made with my A4 mk1

A nice saturator and some eq afterwards is always good too! I find the Moog MF Drive on all sorts of bass sources is good for adding power

Good point, in my rig I actually use the direct out of the AR’s Dual VCO (clap/rim)into my Analog Drive pedal and it’s huge!

True. Moog pedals have nice saturation. Also a bit of Plasma pedal (20% mix) is cool. Tons of good options in software too.

My ultimate tool for bassline is PERfourMER MKII. 4 VCO at same time hit hard. Ok, it’s my ultimate weapon for everything I love so much this synth.

Cutoff and Resonance of the Akai MFC-42 Analog Filter Module.

BT of the AR mk2.

Moog Sirin.

Digitone.

And recently, the Novation Peak with its Resonance that boosts (unlike Moog) the Cutoff Low Freq.

That cheap 808 plugin on iOS ( they’ve done a few open source things , I’ll dig the name out later )

My 2 current fave bassline things.

Micro freak did some nice blips too last time I used it.

It depends on the type of bass you want, but for me any ‘miniMoog’ replica works best.
Also, the old EFM synth in Logic. Or any FM synth, really

Kobol
Or odyssey
Or FM

In my experience, Moog Minitaur and Toraiz AS-1 are top. Nothing beats the Moog for solid low end oomph (syncing the phase of its oscillators) and the Toraiz just sounds so good (like the P6 but better). Studio Electronics SE-1 pretty close as well.
Just got a Grandmother which might unseat those, still in the testing phase. Werkstatt also recently acquired with only one oscillator hits surprisingly hard.

Sub37 is my usual bass monster but finding my new DN has a huge array of bass sounds, especially monster sub basses.

It will be perfect - it sounds absolutely huge.

SE-02 is bass for days. Actually helps to have the Ext-box to have a HP filter to pair with it.

Also Roland’s ACB plug-out SH-2 emulation is excellent and was permanently installed into my System-1 when I had it.

And I’ll +1 the Peak, overkill if you only wanted it for bass but it really excels at a very wide range of bass sounds.

OG Pro One. Not played with the B clone but if it’s close enough it’s should be a little monster.

B clone of the Model D. Not got pockets deep enough for the real thing but the clone can go from deep to spanking with a load of sweet spots in between.

AS-1. Sounds ace for bass but I prefer it for leads and pads. A taste of the P6 on a shoestring.

Can I third for the Peak? For the same reasons

My Behringer Pro-One is my go to for basslines for basically every track. Really great for both nasty de-tuned lines and gritty sub bass, and responds to overdrive well. If I want something cleaner, I’ll go to my Digitone. SH-01A for more liquidy, resonance-based sounds, the Pro-1 filter resonance destroys the body of the sound.
