UB-Xa ( Keyboard and Desktop ) from Behringer

I don’t mind all these Oberheim reviews as long as none of them mention the three dreaded words ‘Sawyer’, ‘Jump’ or ‘Tom’ (not necessarily in that order).

Heheheheheh!!!

That’s the funny thing for me. I actually like those songs.

I just don’t want to hear synth nerds argue about synths that sound like them ad-nauseum, nor their own renditions of the synth lines. It’s funny that for way more people than you would think, these two sounds are the soul factors by which a synth’s worthiness as a product are judged. It’s actually hard to think about, without either a heavy sadness, or bursting out in maniacal laughter.

Though I will admit that I had to make the TS sweep on a Rev2 once because someone was saying that it was impossible. Granted it took a lot more work, and a few less orthodox methods to make it sound right, but it was close. Before that, and ever since though, I am happy to say that I have NOT recreated those sounds.

That said, when someone really wants to know how to make a given sound… …possibly even those ones… I do like to help out with some tips sometimes. No need to be grumpy about it.

I like both those songs too! Not being completely serious… but it does do my head in a bit that whenever someone does an Oberheim review (ok not all) they somehow seem to go to the same two songs from forty years ago to judge its ‘Oberheimness’. The classic Oberheims, the OB6, the OB-X8 and, by the looks of it, this new Behringer all seen like incredible synths, capable of a lot, and all will have their differences and idiosyncrasies too!

I agree completely!

Just like the Prophet Rev2, Prophet-6, Prophet-5, Prophet-10, B-Pro-800.

Or say:

The M and the 3rd Wave.

Or the Jupiter 8, ISE-NIN, or the possible B-Jup.

(CS-80s too. )

Just some extra examples. There’s something to like about all of them, and easy enough IMO to choose the right one for whatever one’s needs are, IF they even need one of them.

Totally, there are some amazing polysynths out there. Interestingly, two of the most ‘successful’ people I know in music have the belief that you need two polysynths max… one of them insists you only need one! My personal favourite is the original Prophet 08 (obviously similar to the Rev 2), as I got to know it inside out and I always find it inspiring, always find something new to explore. I could probably do with just that one tbh. But I’m sure I would miss the others at some point…

Crocketts Theme sounds ok too. But it really is an 80’s sound. No escaping it.

I agree with that too actually. For me, I like to have:

A couple of Elektrons.
A couple of mono synths (currently mine are the Grandmother and Pro-3)
One good polyphonic keyboard. (Currently without due to studio shrinkage.)
Possibly some supplemental synths like Waldorf M or XT or something like these that add some unique sounds.
A small and focused but healthy modular setup.

That’s a pretty well rounded setup for how I make music these days.

As soon as I have space, I’ll be adding the poly back in. (probably Super Gemini)

Nothing wrong with some good 80s sounds either. I still like all those sounds. I also like modern sounds though, and also don’t solely judge a synth on whether it can do “that one 80s sound”

Discounting flood, pestilence or any other act of god I’ll have mine on Monday. Cant wait!

Eh? Yeah… I love Crocket’s theme. And Miami Vice too for that matter. It was just a wee joke about Oberheim reviews and those two tunes.

I guess if there were DX7 clones being released would they try to recreate Jan Hammer in the reviews? Maybe should have done for the Digitone!

Absolutely. A bit like Stairway to Heaven in a Guitar Shop.

Hahaha… love the idea of certain tunes being banned in a synth shop

Got to be No1. I’d add Rhubarb as well. Seems to be a standard now in synth shops

Any talk about the module version?

@jukka posted some stuff further up the thread. I imagine they’ll move on to it once they roll out the keyboard version fully.

Interesting, I have not listened with headphones, but many of those patch versions on the UB-Xa sound a lot less pleasant due to more extreme settings for everything that detunes a sound (detune, pwm), too slow vibrato etc. …
