Has anyone got links to any useful articles, videos, books etc on drum synthesis that outline drum programming basics through to experimental tips?
Also any links for Analog Four drum libraries would be great to use as a starting point.
Finally any personal tricks that you use daily to sculpt percussion sounds for your projects with the Analog Four? This could be sound sculpting, sequencing, macro programming, fx tricks etc…
KICKS - 2end filter in highpass to fuck-up low-frequencies .
fast attack - env. Fool around with both resonant settings . Tailing with the release part of the envelopês - both filter and amp envelopes can change alot the caracter.
HIGH-HATS or CIMBALS - 2 end filter in highpass but now to cut away the Low Freq. > lat the tails move a little - by LFO’s - use the fade-in parameter so the Lfo works in th tail of the sound…
Also > little chorus and reverb can help - use the oscillator 2 vibrato with a fade-in to make the tail move - to get metallic tails that wobble .
High resonance in upper frequencies.
Everything in percussion ( besides kicks - I think ) can benifit from the noise-oscillator.
I think that every Short sound can be a Drum sound. But most of the time any Drumsound has a Amp and or Freqencie -Burst at the beginning with fastly a much lower sutain followed or even no sustain at all.
Keep the Attack-fase at 0
Most important >>> Make your Drum sounds on the fly while composing ( I would like to recommend this for all kinds of sounds ) as every sound is of influence and will define the sounds atround it.
FX - Delays are very useful - to avoid a mess - use the Highpass filter to filter the Low-freq.out .
First things I could think of - BUT -Etc… Etc… Etc…
These machines areamazing to make a endless variaty in Kicks !
To keep Kick’s consistant it’s a good idea to go to the 2’end Osscilator 2 - page. Here you can make shure that the oscillators start the same every trig.
Extreme fast LFO’s can help to add a enery-burst at the attack -fase with a fade-out . Or a fade-in if you want to modulate the tail. using these to modulate the resonance of the filters to add matallic ringing for ex
.For triplets ( or very fast ruffles ) you can use the arpeggiator
I allmost never try to imitate acoustic Drumsounds but keep the caracter in mind. What I mean is this >>>
Every acoustic ( drum ) - sound has a general feeling into my ears and that’s where I start . For ex. - A SNARE has a very strong energy - a superfast attack - lot’s of noise - and no tail. So that’s the caracter. so that’s the feeling I’m looking for.
Instead of imitating a real snare it’s sufficient for me to keep the caracter, so I only need a fast attack - the noise - strong energy and no tail. That gives me a lot of freedom to fill in all the rest. In this way I’ll get “SNARISH” sounds.
In this way every sound can be a basis - inspiration to start synthesizing.
Interesting to know > whenever 2 identical sounds follow eatchother very fast - the first one will seem to sound louder. So it’s a good idea to lower the volume of the first one.
And, Whenever using high - resonant levels it can happen that you get Clicks and Pops in very high Frequencies. Check if the amp-release stage is at 0 - sometimes just adding a little tail ( 1 to 9 )can make these disappear ( you could check the other Env settings to if needed ).
If not expereiment with the other ENV settings or by lowering the resonance ore Filter cut-off. These clicks can be iteresting too - with some FX -Delay added ( eventually. filtering away the lo-freq. with the High-pass in the dely page ) to add some ritmical flavor in the high frequencies.
adding Reverb on some trigs - keeping the rest dry is one of my favorites.Thesame with Delays - as FX are send-return you can get those typical DUB-DELAYS . This is graet fun if yousend by the performance knobs - on the fly - while jamming
Nice trick >> pan 2 following Drum '( or other ) sounds at opposite sides of the center. Be sure the first sound tails until ( reaches ) the second one. They can be 1 or several trigs apart depending the result you’re after. make Paramter-slide highlightening trig 1.
