Turning Ideas into Compositions

Thanks so much @PeterHanes for reminding me of this post.

It’s been nearly 4 years since I originally posted and so much learning has happened since. I have a workflow now that works really well for me and I’ve used it to some level of success. Reading my words from back then makes me feel like I’ve grown some and for that I’m grateful ! :purple_heart::purple_heart:

Here are some cool tips from Brian Eno

Making a loop into a beat, I usually try to ask these questions:

  1. Does shortening the loop add tension?
  2. Can parts of the loop be rearranged/reversed to add variation?
  3. Can I pitch it up or down with cool results?
  4. Does a HPF or LPF help this beat be more effective?
  5. Do I have a good A/B section?

This is sometimes a method I apply, if I have created a short idea of 4 to 16 bars.

I beef it up to the be the all-in part of the track. Maybe I will create some variations from it too. Then I decompose the idea to become intro, outro, breakdowns, buid-ups, drops, etc.

It compares to the work of a mason. Have your rock and take away, what is not needed …
