Complete MIDI noob here - I’m having trouble setting up my Digitakt and Monomachine so that the Digitakt Midi tracks trig sound from the Monomachine.
All I’ve managed to do so far is sync the clock between the two so that the Digitakt is the hub. On the Monomachine, I see where the midi settings are, but I’m not sure exactly what they should all be. They’re all set to their default values/channels right now. In the midi sequence settings for example, it says track #1 is set to channel 10. On one of the Digitakt midi tracks I’ve set the midi source channel to 10, and I get nothing…
What you are looking at is the midis sequences setting on the mono. Disregard that for now. Under global settings there are some control options for midi and transport, you should activate the applicable setting. Recieve clock, receive transport, etc.
The you have to activate send transport and clock on the digi and the midi track on the digi by hold function and pressing the encoder while on one of the actual midi tracks.
The monomachine a track 1-6 are controlled by midi channels 1-6
Under Global Settings on the Monomachine I have:
•Tempo sync: Ext Midi clk
•Transport: Accept
•Prg Change: Base
And on the Digitakt I have it sending transport and clock. Still, when I set a digitakt midi track to channel 1 I get nothing. Is there something else I need to set on the mm/digi?
Also there’s an option in the DT under MIDI or Sync (I always get the two confused) called Send Notes, should be turned on by default but double check just in case
Oh also make sure in the MIDI options it’s set to send over MIDI or USB, whichever you’re using (or just MIDI+USB)
Not sure if just bad wording but I noticed you said “source channel” here, so to clear even more up:
In the DT MIDI options, you can set INCOMING channels even to the MIDI tracks. That’s like if you have an external keyboard or other sequencer that’s sending stuff INTO the DT. If that’s the page you’re setting the channel on, that could be why nothing’s working (it looks like a big list of tracks where you can see all the channels, and the Auto Channel, FX channel etc.)
You have to do like @jefones said by using the function+encoder thing to “turn on” the MIDI track that the DT is going to send to… That’s on the SRC page of the MIDI track, all the boxes should be X’d out by default, hold FUNC and press encoder A, it should change that MIDI box to a number, then turn the encoder to select your channel. That’s for OUTGOING MIDI
Ah yeah that was just bad wording - what I meant is that the CHAN on the DT SRC page is set.
In response to your last message - no, the DT track isn’t muted. In SYNC settings on the DT I have Clock Send and Prog Ch Send checked. I don’t see a Send Notes setting? There’s only a Receive Notes setting in the Port Config.
So, it seems like it’s probably something not being set in the Monomachine? There are a lot of midi settings under global / control, and I only assigned the global “Control In” settings that I listed above in my previous post. hmm…
OK apparently I was making that part up about Send Notes. That’s what happens when you play on this thing when you’re too tired.
Well, I’m not sure what else to suggest
Do you have any other equipment you can test in place of the monomachine? You could at least verify that the DT is sending stuff out properly, then you’d know it’s most likely not the DT and probably an issue with the monomachine settings or something in between
Physical connections:
Connect a working MIDI cable from DT MIDI Out to MM MIDI In.
If you have synchronization working already, then the cable is likely to be OK. For sequencing the MM from the DT, you don’t actually need to set up any synchronization settings.
On the MM:
Look at the BASE CHANNEL and CHANNEL SPAN settings in the GLOBAL > CONTROL > MIDI CHANLS menu: the default values are 01 and 06. If these values are set the MM’s six synth tracks will respond on MIDI channels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
On the DT:
In SETTINGS > MIDI CONFIG > PORT CONFIG menu,
set OUT PORT FUNC to “MIDI”;
set OUTPUT TO to “MIDI”.
Follow the instructions for the MIDI sequencer notes to use the MIDI channel numbers (for the MM’s defaults, 1 to 6) that the MM is set to.
@PeterHanes - went through everything you listed and got it working. Thanks everyone.
Another detail for others having trouble - make sure you’re either using an audio interface to hear audio from both the MM and DT, or plug in the MM to the DT and enable the DT to play incoming audio.
