Triggering RYTM with external audio?

Hi guys. I’m a bit new to this idea with the RYTM so apologies if this has been covered somewhere else, but…

Has anyone had any success with using a drum kit to trigger RYTM sounds, and if so how did you go about doing that?

I don’t have an AR but, as far as I know, its audio inputs simply go into the compressor and there’s no signal route from the audio inputs that can trigger the drum voices. You would have to use MIDI.

That’s right.

I guess my question is more along the lines of people here using audio to trigger MIDI and effective ways of doing this

Hi: to understand more clearly: You want to trigger the Rytm sounds with an acoustic drum set?

Is that for a live use or for studio?

I’m sure that you already thought about this, but the problem is that you will need very big venues if you want to avoid people listening to the acoustic sound instead of the Rytm.

That’s a good question. Mainly for studio use at this time. Muffled kit and clipped hats really, I don’t want the acoustic drums sounds, I just want to trigger the RYTM independently via the kit at this stage and am seeing if anyone here has any experience in doing this

Nord drum 2?

as well as triggering the nord it sends the trigger in to midi out so acts like a audio to midi converter

Pricier but the nord is pretty cool in itself

Maybe better if using pads too…as will no doubt bleed if using mics
you can change the trigger velocity on each trigger though

use piezo mics (you know those cheap as chips mics many art school ppl use in their installations) as contact triggers and hook em up to an electronic drum brain that accepts trig inputs, and from there to MIDI and into the rytm. Nord ddrum (3 AFAIK?) at least had trigger inputs, but I’m sure there’s loads of different models around in Ebayland.

Better to research a bit on drumbrain units as their MIDI implementations might differ from one another, some might not be that useful for sending MIDI to the AR in the correct format (unless you add a MIDI translator plus or the upcoming bomebox between the two)

Thanks guys.

Yep, I get the whole piezo thing, 8th just never had to use them in a MIDI trigger way. The Nord2 sounds great as a solution as I could use the sounds no doubt.

It’d be good if someone who’s used the RYTM in this way could chime in though - I’m wondering if there’s a more intelligent way to set this up than I’ve realized…

Maybe the best thing is to use an SPDS or some other midi equipment to trigger the Rytm.
I am a drummer and I can’t see the point in playing a drum set just to hit stopped and muffled skins instead of using rubber pads…

I’ve never enjoyed the kinetic nature of that set up though - I enjoy playing in a set up which is familiar so I’d like to work around a normal drum kit. I hate playing pads.
