Does anybody have any tricks for widening out a drum machine which is coming in mono? I’ve had to finally give up another input to a synth and now my drums are coming in on just the “D”. Any good tricks? I’ve played around with spatialize to some mixed results. I’ve been trying to cook up some flex recorder tricks, but nothing amazing yet.
What are people’s takes on drum tracks in mono/stereo? Can anybody think of some songs in which the drums are mono and the artist made it work?

I run a mono output Nord Drum 1 into one of my A4’s inputs.
.
What I do to widen it is p-lock some pans and also fx sends (chorus, reverb) on the steps where there is no kick drum, which is, fortunately, the majority of them. The results sounds like…well, you would never know the input was mono.
You should be able to accomplish something similar with OT.
.
I’ve found this method to be so useful that when I upgrade to a Nord Drum 2, even though it has stereo output, I’ll run it mono and use the same technique. It is just as effective as running stereo but opens up another external input for yet another mono source that I can widen. It’s all thanks to parameter locks.
musicmagus` and AdamJays answers are my answer too.
let it be in mono or play around with p-locks. best results when you
use your drum machine as a live input. another method could be to “sacrifice” one or more tracks to pre-record the sounds you want to have in stereo.
processing a whole mono drum mix with stereo fx can be fun too of course,
but I would use that more for special effects/experimental loops/breaks etc.
mono is perfectly ok in many cases, so there is many place for other stereo sounds.
too much stereo sounds like mono anyway
