As I wrote quickly in the topic’s title : I want to sync my OT to Cockos Reaper. OT is set to both Transport and Clock “Receive” (PROJ > MIDI > SYNC), an Reaper to send MIDI to the OT, which seems to work when I press Play in Reaper… but when I press Stop the Octatrack just pauses. The only way I figured out to stop it properly (in order that it resets on the first time of the bar the next time it plays) is to actually press the Stop button directly on the Octatrack.
Oh yes. Well maybe clock without transport is being sent then. This is the behaviour you’d see with a clock being passed without transport (if the clock is coming from a device that pauses clock when transport is stopped, I only discovered fairly recently in life that this is a thing!).
You were right, Reaper sends a “continue” message when pressing play ! Which kind of makes sense I suppose since it’s a DAW.
Annoying though, I thought I would use it as my master for composing tracks and possibly playing them live. The sync between Reaper (as master) and the Octatrack (as slave) appears to be pretty bad as well - I wonder why.
I think there’s an option under preferences - midi. Check the midi out port you are using for OT, there should be a way to set it to send start instead of continue message.
Yeah well… I just unplugged an Akai Force from my setup and will sell it because I just don’t like it… so buggy. I needed a machine capable to deal with long MIDI sequences, possibly with a lot of notes, capable to load MIDI files, a machine with good MIDI editing tools… I also wanted to play without a computer but decided in the end to put that wish on the side, some other day maybe (maybe I’ll just end up with an MPC1000/JJOS again).
Are you implying that DAWs in general are bad for syncing gear like the OT? Never had such sync problems before to be honest, and Reaper + several machines definitely was one of my regular setups.
I heard a few complains…I didn’t experimented myself. But OT can be synced really well with other hardware…
I don’t know. I have a good RME soundcard, but no hard disk since…15 years !
I gave DAW lessons 20 years ago, then I had a web job with computers so I saturated and I went back to 100% hardware for creative part. DAW for accurate audio editing on grid…sample chains…
Aha I had it just before OT, bought it again because of OT limitations but finally I didn’t use it. I have an MPC 500 just in case I need linear and midi files…
Indeed there is ! I tried it though already, with no success…
edit : retried it quickly and I was wrong, I must have make something wrong the last time I tried : this option does change something - will report here when I’ll have more time to test it
So I can confirm that Reaper restarts the OT properly at every new play, when the option “Do not send SPP to output” is checked for the corresponding MIDI OUT (the one sending the transport messages to the OT).
