Traditional inspired African music (like Konono n°1)

Wow, very interesting timbres and crazy harmonies.

Edit: It made me think of a track from Wendy Carlos’ “Beauty in the Beast”.

There’s a lot of talking in this video but it’s really interesting and the musical technique to play the one note flute is fantastic.

We saw Fulu Miziki at the Deershed festival earlier this year. They put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I love dancing and this was right up there as one of the best dance floors I’ve ever been a part of. I left utterly drained but with a huge smile and a deep sense of contentment. What made it even better is that they make their own instruments and costumes from scrap and look like they belong in science fiction. Utterly amazing.

I’m extremely fond of Aka pygmy music.

More similar to Konono n°1, come in mind bands like KOKOKO!, Kasai Allstars, the Congotronics compilations, Sobanza Mimanisa, Kisanzi Congo, Basokin.

I also like stuff like:

EDIT: I forgot to mention Clap! Clap!

Another thing:

That’s a remix of Chiwoniso take on traditional mbira song “Zvichapera” from Zimbabwe.

I could go on all day, I’m playing afro guitar stuff and I’ve been essentially listening african music throughout the last 15 years

Thanks, I had seen this thread but was looking more particularly into African music.

“African” music is a very large term though. Somehow I don’t think anybody would look for “asian music” for instance. There are some connections between genres in african music but it’s a whole continent with many different styles and influences. The same music of Perou has not much to see with music from Appalaches, music from Congo has very few links with ethiopian or egypt one.

Mali itself for example has so many different genres, from Songhai to Donso, Touareg to mandinka, you could spend a life time exploring only these.

Indeed. To be accurate, I should have added sub-saharian, or something.

But strangely enough, all the references mentioned here seem to point to exactly what I was looking for. So I guess a fair proportion of people have the same understanding as me.

Ethiopian music - although it’s also sub-saharian - seems like a thing on its own (and that’s not what I was particularly interested in)

This is precisely what I would like to know more about!

Like, I know Ali Farka Touré, but beyond that, I’m clueless.

The post I linked to is about my favorite album of African music.

After lurking in the thread awhile, I’m still not real clear how modern or traditional to get here … so I’m going to assume you just want the net cast wide. Here are a couple different musics from different parts of the continent:

I went through a phase where I was listening to a ton of these North African guitar bands. These bands are amazing with the mix of traditional music and blues and psychedelic influences. I love that it’s African diaspora music influencing African bands.

Bombino

Tinariwen

Ali Farke Toure

Yes! On that same tip, there’s also the old Congolese guitar band music influenced by even older Cuban music. I love this whole album:
