I set myself a little challenge to try and learn the AR better, and to come up with some new music. The rules I set for myeslf was simply only use the AR, no samples.
The drums of course were easy to make, but had to get a bit more creative for melodic parts. Anyone else do this kind of thing and have some tips on how to do melodic stuff on it?
I used Plastic for the bass - I also found the Toms could make a quite good hollow / acid bass sound, tuning wasnt too hard either. And the Cowbell could be detuned to do kind of pad-like sounds. I am also thinking that the pulse could trigger the filter to be self oscilating - but this is harder to track I guess.
Usually I write melodic parts directly in Cubase. If it’s melodies I mostly will write them on a piano and then do the sound design afterwards.
Any tips on the synthesis of the AR is welcome. Maybe something cool could be done with the FM Bd?
The Impulse machine can make a sweet lead but it’s a pita to plock the filter.
EDIT: just realized perhaps a workaround might be sending a CC from DAW for the AR to record? Is that feasible? Sending a note plus filter CC while in Live record mode? Must try…someday…
The AR can record MIDI so maybe just send it out from Cubase?
I think I will incorporate some of these loops into our live-set, since they are super fun to play and can be performed from the AR alone. Moving the kit and pattern from one project to another, I just need to use C6, right?
Yeah, if you send the MIDI from cubase, just enable realtime record at the right moment to capture the midi data into the sequencer loop (and of course disengage realtime rec when the loop is fully captured).
I tried this yesterday but without luck. I have done it on the A4 and Octa. I could trigger the notes with Cubase, but it didn’t want to record. I must admit I didn’t spend a lot of time investigating, any obvious things I should have looked for?
Check and recheck all of your midi related settings on your rytm. Are you sending to the correct channels? is “RECEIVE NOTES” enabled? Is remote control set to listen to CC and not NRPN? Are your MIDI input port settings correct? (USB or MIDI). Also check that overbridge mode is off, unless you are using overbridge for controlling the rytm.
