Touch Up Paint For Octatrack MkI

Hello Everyone,
I just received an Octatrack MKI and it has some chips in the paint. Does anyone have a good recommendation on touch up paint? Links, colors, brands would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

Canā€™t help with paint, but Iā€™m sure someone will.
I was going to suggest looking at the crema cafĆ© OT skins. Theyā€™re not adhesive and are held in place by the knobsā€¦
Thereā€™s a thread about them somewhere.

Thank you for the response, but unfortunately itā€™s the side corner that is scuffed and chipped really badly. So the faceplate covers wonā€™t help in this case, but they are really cool looking.

Buy an older one, stonger paint!
Unfortunately true. Mine is without paint problems, maybe 7 years old or more, my A4 has definitely more paint problems. Iā€™ll keep it as it is.

A simple black markerā€¦

This is an older model (it even has the older PSU model) and the build quality is amazing but unfortunately it looks like FedEx played soccer with it. They were so rough with it that the board attached to the fader became unattached and I had to open it up and reattach it. I actually downgraded from the MKII to the MKI because I feel like the build quality is better with the older models. Iā€™m considering black marker but I know they sell touch up paint for refrigerators that is a similar texture but I want to make sure I get the color right. Thank you for the response though!

And just to be sure, you see metal?
Not a serigraphy erasing problem?
I had this problem with a black faceplate for MD. The faceplate is still great, serigraphy faded away quickly.

It actually punctured the box and there was bits of what looked like concrete or gravel stuck in those little pockets. I will not be using FedEx ever again. The box looked like it went through a war zone. This thing is a beast for making it out of it alive.

Be careful, donā€™t want the equivalent of this to happen

i touched up a scuff on the bottom corner of my digitone pretty successfully with some satin finish black enamel - like rustoleum. Pretty fussy and fiddly work, but here is what I did:

  1. CAREFULLY sand and or file down the rough metalā€¦ carefully!! I realize that this seems completely contrary to what you ultimately want to accomplishā€¦but needs to be done or it will always look rough- paint is not a fillerā€¦ guess you could use some bondo or something but that could lead to a lot of clean upā€¦ anyway make it smooth(er)
  2. clean it with some denatured alcohol.
  3. using tiny tiny brush- like for D&D miniatures -size #000- carefully touch up the paint with a thin coat. try to only get it on the bare metal. ( I did not use a primer for my first coat- went right to the enamel, but primer would not be a bad idea for the first round. )
  4. after it starts to set and is sorta dry to the touch, yo will need to futz with it a little to get the finish to match I used my finger tip and maybe a clean cotton rag to carefully ā€œdabā€ at the paint to finesse itā€¦ kinda using a stippling motion, trying to get the new paint to blend with and match the duller finish of the DN paint.
  5. repeat step 4 a few times as necessary. Try not to let too much paint build up outside of the scratches, on top of intact existing paint. if you get some paint outside of the scratches, the enamel can be removed e with a little mineral spirits on a rag. Also, if your first couple of tries look like crap, just wipe it off and try again.

Right now we (the seller and I) are waiting for FedEx to reply with what they will cover. Reading other topics about sending the unit back to Elektron, which probably wonā€™t be an option since itā€™s way out of warranty, it doesnā€™t seem to be a good idea. A lot of the Elektronauts that sent chipped items back to Elektron received them back with more chips than they started out with. Itā€™s not enough paint damage for me to want to paint the whole unit with spray paint and the reason that option wouldnā€™t work is because part of the damage is the faceplate and then you would be painting over all of the shortcuts (like you said). The finish is almost the same as an appliance paint and I know they sell touch up appliance paint in black. Maybe Iā€™ll just try that. Iā€™m not too concerned with the color matching precisely, I just want the item to look a little nicer since the corner is pretty noticeable.

Thank you for your help and reply!

Thank you! Sounds like thatā€™s what Iā€™m going to have to do. Did you use a specific color or just Rust-O-Leum Satin Black? In my case itā€™s just that corner so itā€™ll be really easy to sand down and paint.

Does your OT have a ā€˜harshā€™ or ā€˜smoothā€™ top plate covering? I remember there was a couple of different revisions for MK1, the older units had attritive faceplate material while the newer ones were kind of ā€˜polishedā€™ (and the text captions on it were way more likely to rub away)

BTW, what exactly made you think that MK2 build quality compares poorly to MK1?

Thank you sir! Sorry I misread where you said if itā€™s the bottom only. Iā€™m actually going to try the rustoleum appliance paint since itā€™s a very small area and has the same rough texture that my late model MKI has. Thank you both for all of your help!

My OT has the harsher finish which is why I have decided to go with the rusoleum black appliance oil based paint. It has the texture of a refrigerator finish which is a lot like my OT (the older model). This is actually my third OT. The first one (MKI) I owned had really bad knob wobble from the previous owner but was built like a tank, I then upgraded to the MKII but didnā€™t like the Digitakt style buttons (although I did like the bigger display and sturdier knobs), ultimately I decided to go back to the MKI. Maybe itā€™s because I already have a Digitakt in my set line up, maybe I just like the feel of the buttons on this version, but for whatever reason I prefer the I over the II. I have actually spoke to a few other Elektronauts that share a similar opinion. Have you tried them both?

This is what Iā€™m going to try.

Iā€™m going to follow Charbots instructions but instead of satin black Iā€™m going to use this

I will update you guys with the outcome and pictures. A huge thank you to Jukka, NUoldNu, and Charbot for your help.

I just used some true-value satin black enamel that my mom had in her garage. its pretty much the same as regular rustoleum enamel. Just uses the regular stuff, in a can. you may be stuck buying a whole quart, but its fairly cheap.
