Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

It happened to me when I tried to download it but after some tries it worked. I have the zip file in my computer in case you need me to upload it

they sent me the coupon code so thinking whether it is worth buying since I already have ipad granular samplers.

If it doesn’t work out you should be able to re-sell that bundle for the price you paid (or close enough).

My 2c: I have Borderlands Granular, Tardigrain, Silo, Fluss, Gauss, and I might be forgetting others.

S4 has been a lot of fun for me, and I don’t regret the purchase at all

before I buy it will watch tutorial videos on the Torso S4 and decide if the workflow is for me or not since I went through a similar exercise with tracker hardware and tried my friend’s M8 tracker and tracker apps before realizing my brain does not gel well with that type of workflow.

I find it very difficult to draw conclusions from YouTube videos. Is kinda like trying to taste a dish from a photograph or something like that :stuck_out_tongue:

I, for instance, ended up enjoying it more than I expected, but YMMV.
I actually tried it out briefly at a shop, but since I didn’t have enough time to learn it beforehand the experience wasn’t the same as having it for several days. If you can have one for a few days, I would recommend it.

The S-4 is about as opposite from the M8/tracker workflow as you can possibly get. The workflow is incredibly quick and intuitive once you are used to it, but I haven’t seen many videos that really show that aspect of it, or many ā€œmake a track in real-time type videos for the S-4ā€

The two videos below are the ones that showed me enough about how it works and what it does that I immediately decided to get one:

Thomann is doing a deal until 18th September - they’re including the decksaver and carry case when you buy an S-4.

Does the decksaver fit on the S-4 when it’s in the case? Is this overkill? Not sure whether to go for this deal or buy second hand.

unfortunately it still needs a sequencer. I am leaning toward Tonverk or Tasty Chips for granular sampler in the future. Beetlecrab Tempera looks interesting as well.

There isn’t sequencer in Tempera (but it’s a very good synth) - S4 is more like a 4 track tape set up, very much like Op1, different vibe to the sequenced.units

I don’t think the decksaver fit into the case. The case is very well made and very tight. I have the decksaver too and I doubt it fits into the case.

I think that I need to try these out in store. Leaning toward Tonverk in future as I have lot of polyphonic synths.

Even the power supply doesn’t fit.

I bought it about ten days ago and first tried it out on its own. With OS 2.2, when working in standalone mode, it’s nice… it sounds good… it has an Instagrammable look, super design. Then I integrated it into a setup with a Tonverk, an Analog Four, and other vintage synths… and that’s when my jaw dropped… absurd bugs… MIDI clock doing whatever it wants… In the end, to sync it up, I had to connect it to the A4’s CV just to get less jitter, but then new problems started piling up…

Long story short: when you spend more time calculating clock sub-multipliers, tricking algorithms, and fighting with saving bugs instead of making music, it means the machine is not suited for a live workflow—especially for someone used to Elektron’s professional standards and reliability.

Spending over €800 only to end up doing software acrobatics is unacceptable for a live performance context, where everything must be 100% rock-solid. The Torso S4 has gorgeous hardware and great ideas on paper, but the current firmware is clearly unstable and immature when it comes to time and project management.

I just bought both the battery and this cable:
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0B9FDZX7P?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
I’m a bit scared of connecting it since I don’t see any mention of polarity anywhere, can you confirm it is the same one? thanks!

That looks like the exact one I bought…and I felt the exact same as you. It took me a couple days before I even got up the courage to plug it in. Even worse that the S-4 takes like 20 seconds to start up. Good luck. :upside_down_face:

Here’s what happened: The Torso support person sent me a link to the zip file for FW 2.2.0 on Google Drive, and of course downloading it worked.

I’ve thanked him, but also asked whether this issue is going to be fixed on the official site, since his solution suggests this is a widespread user issue. Torso typically responds in two to four days, so I haven’t heard back.

But it’s good to get a link from Torso directly to a file Google Drive can’t scan due to the size. I don’t know whether I’d have trusted it otherwise.

Now to find out whether that invisible _. file that the Mac OS spews is going to present a second problem.

Torso says the official cover isn’t designed to fit into the case, which seems a bizarre decision.

Funny you should mention the M8. I’m going to be taking the S-4 and M8 on a week-long vacation with my wife, who’s an excellent painter. I’m also taking two MiniRig speakers, a Zoom F4 and ultrasonic mics for field recording (because you can play incredibly slowed-down, high-quality audio files in your DAW without converting them). I might also bring a powered USB host dock.

The idea is that she’ll paint and sketch while I write music and fiction.

Obviously, I have to try out that S-4, M8 setup before I go. But even if I can’t sync the two devices, I’m hoping to be productive on both. And obviously, I can still record the S-4 with the M8 and transfer audio files – though I’d usually need to copy over the files from one SD to the other with my desktop.
