Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

Torso is a very small company, with 1.5 products. And S4 is more of a software product with hw interface. They’re not developing any hardware. Therefor I do think that the regular parts any of us can buy must be exactly what they use.

Found this in Torsos Discord.

I’ve got response from T|SO

“We have looked into the jumpy behaviour with the SELECT encoder and we have found a solution from the software side to tune the encoder so it doesn’t jump values as seen in the video.
We are pushing this in a firmware release as soon as possible.”

Well, the dislike on first impression came faster then I could ever expected. Trying to nail that menu item 5 minutes after opening the brand new DHL delivered box. I somehow hate it already. NOt just empty encoder jump on rotation, but I also get jumps on loose wiggle. I mean, Torso, are you serious???

I don’t think people is happy with this issue…That is not acceptable… Maybe i’m happy because i don’t have this kind of issue ( for now ) and I can use the machine without problems.

@mp You need to ask for a replacement…

Ew, why is it so wobbly?

What can I say. It came with 2.0.3 firmware, so no one will convince me, that this junk is sent from the HQ them not knowing but clearly don’t give a damn about it. Sometimes in the menu the wiggle does not register, then in some it does and jumps all over like its on crack.

Obviously sent email if that announced firmware is coming any dayor not. I do have 30 days for return, but it will be packed and sent if no email received next week. I am speechless. Definitely S4 takes credit as easily the worst hardware quality on arrival I have had bought in my 30+ music explorer carrier.

@alejander . . man, I don’t know if I care for replacement. I am afraid they lost me . . I gave them the chance and here I am bragging about encoder issue like its 2024. pulling my lemondrop from sale

The people swearing off the device but still posting regularly…do we need a separate users thread for people actually working with it? for tips/tricks, use cases etc? I have my own qualms with it but this thread is constantly spinning its wheels on the same 2 issues and it belies some really cool creative possibilities.

I get if it’s not for you, based on issues around quality or whatever, but can those of us who remain, can we get on with it?

Yep, that’s the one. As a former user, I’d return it and eye something else.

People racking up 100 posts in this thread, 85 of them talking about how much they hate the S-4 and actually it’s unusable for everyone, even people who say they like it. Crossed the line into agenda-posting a long time ago, muted the user but probably time to mute the thread at this stage.

Yeah, good idea. You got me there for a moment …… I thought I wrongly posted in the Tonverk thread.

Please feel free to mute who you want or maybe upload your creation with S4 and I will gladly give it a like as I usually do if the track is dope and I like it. But I will also gladly hear people who have other experiences with the tool they bought and how they use it.

In my case as a new user I showed of unacceptable quality flaw with brand new and pricey device. And I shared my experience for the reason to give other potential buyers a head up.

I would understand if I am on loop for months and bashing the S4 for not fixing mine, but I just got a brand new one and it does looks like Lego assembly done by my kid. What should I be praising? But flag me in April if I am doing it again.

Sorry yours didn’t work out for you, but your post wasn’t really what I was talking about. It feels like this thread is overwhelmed a few posters who never had one, had one and didn’t get on with it, or sent it back without opening the box because of what they read on the internet, and keep on hanging around and around jumping in to amplify any issues whenever anyone mentions one, drowning out everything else.

I guess I could also do a video showing how the encoders on mine are fine first to give potential buyers a heads up in the name of democracy and free speech, etc., but that’d get pretty boring too if you get my point.

Anyway, the upside is that it’s been such a head melt that it’s made me stop reading this board and focus on playing music, so probably a net positive. I do own an S-4 and it’s still working out great for me fwiw, if I’m allowed to say this.

Well . . . many if not all here really wanted to use it, so the frustration and in my case disbelieve builds up on all and sets the overall theme of this thread. Thats understood…

But elephant in the room is Torso as a company, not the people here, to blame. Torso still sending these out. Probably should hold shipments until its fixed. Would I send mine back without opening the box? Of course not. I am even willing to keep it as long as my return window is open with hopes for the software fix. …but we should not play the hardware lottery for 1000€ with torso. Thats just bad business.

I guess, if Torso held on shipping, there would be no Torso anymore .

Second Torso S4 with no encoder problems. The first one I had since pretty much launch and used it daily. I never had a problem with any of the encoders.
