Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

It is normal because the encoders are crap. Op-xy has steppend ones too. Its just something different.
Those here are wiggle all over the place.

I use the encoder only for letters input and for bpm sometimes. At first i’ve noticed some skips when turning fast, but i think it is just velocity. Since then i use it in not aggressive
way and it never skips then. I suspect it is more software issue… may be

is the third ok or it still have the issue?

The third at the moment is ok because I don’t use the main encoder unless to rename projects. Normally I clock it externally with Oxo one. And I use the encoder very slowly.

we are not talking here about a wrong use or a software issue.

my set-up is very solid and I have a quite good set-up.

It is interesting as the stepped encoders on the T-1 are some of the best that I’ve used, very precise where 1 click = 1 parameter change. No errors or glitches.

Torso (somehow) confirmed the main encoder issue. But they currently have no idea how to fix it and they will sit down with the manufacturer to find a solution. No reassurance whatsoever (eg we’ll fix faulty units).

I’m happy for everyone with a working device. For me, personally, this means I’m out. Not because of the issue itself, but because of the communication and the way they’re dealing with this.

I really believe its a quality problem on the s4. The encoders are pretty wobbly and you can in fact turn the stepped encoder enough to trigger a value change without it clicking or jump a step.

Not want to go in the price diskussion but if the base is a cheap compute rp4 then its really ugly to cheap out on the encoders given its an 850€ machine.

… I finally sold it. Without any regrets. This machine has a software problem AND a hardware problem. The last QA finished motivating me for the sale. 900€ and the machine is not finished and the ā€œcompanyā€ seems to be struggling and the rest does not look good. There are 8 encoders and computer software. It’s not a rocket! I don’t understand how you can sell a machine like that. And I don’t see anyone here talking about how easy it is to saturate the CPU. They put the power of a calculator in it?

I have always bought good, second-hand, big brand equipment and I have always been very satisfied. This is the first time I’ve tested a small brand and recent projects… Never again.

I don’t have a crazy budget, I have always bought second-hand and resold the same price in order to run the machines and test beautiful things.
This product will lose value very quickly and very significantly. Very happy to get rid of it first.

Honestly I had this opinion even before the encoder issues became the primary discussion point.

I have no gripes with companies using something like an RP4 to build their machine, but it’s ultimately a very nice plugin running on an affordable consumer computer. Even if they used high-end Alps encoders I still struggle to see how it got to Ā£750…

Of course it costs what it costs and it’s up to us to decide if it has the value, and it is very cool, but I can see how that makes it sting a little.

This is a good point. Me neither, but the whole point of putting a little computer with a plugin in a nuce case and give it encoders is to make a nice hardware experience. IF they do so and if they make it expensive then make it good quality.

I was a little bit blindes because those guys made a sympathic impression on me. And somehow I thought they fix it, they seem nice. But having this thing in Front of me changed my mind.
I donā€˜t even think that it could not be repaired in software. To me it seems low quality with lower quality calibration.
I once build a copied organelle and getting te potis to run smoth was a pain in the ass but you can do it and many other companies do it too.
For this amout of money I demand at least that they promise to fix this whatever way.

Deduct +/- 50% for transport, tax and margin for the stores selling it. Then deduct cost for development, material and staff…

I just don’t understand it. I had a conversation with Torso about the encoder issue. And it would have been easy to dissuade me from returning the device. But apparently they don’t care. Like I said, I don’t get it, but you don’t have to understand everything.

Maybe £500 retail?

Either way it’s worth what people will pay for it at the end of the day, and it is a niche device.

If that’s what it costs to get it to market I ain’t complaining.

And here I am thinking about getting another one…

50% for transportation? are you thinking about to a loss making business?

I think 35% for manufacturing, 10% for warehouse and transportation costs, 10% margin to retailer very little marketing costs and rest is all profit margin.

Please read what I wrote.

Do we need a Polymarket bet if Torso will fix it or not?
