Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

Replay from Q&A.

  • Firmware update 2.0.2 for S4
Fixed the startup bug with “clicks and pops” (solution: 1-second startup delay).
Added light mode to support the upcoming white version of the S4.

  • New S4 features (early sneak peek)
    Mosaic device:
Manual control of the read head
Realtime time-stretching (stretching and freezing audio in real time)
New spray modes (including quantized spray for beat slicing)
    First-time stable, artifact-free time-stretching.

New mosaic features shows around 9 minutes of the video.

I didn’t watch the entire video. Do they say when this firmware will be available?
Edit: NM I see it’s available now!

New Mosaic feature is planned to be release soon (in another update). The 2.0.2 fixes bugs and introduce Light Theme.

Watched the stream. Liking the new updates, especially the ability to ‘Send’ on any of the Mix parameters. Been wanting that on the effects since I got the S-4.

Hey, I’m trying to understand the speed / quantize to scale paradigm. These concepts don’t necessarily seem to connect in a straight line as far as the logic behind how they work together.

I’m just reading the manual so I can’t learn by trial, is it possible someone might be able to explain the relationship of the given parameters? I get that “free” acts in a manner unconstrained by quantization or scale, but the inverse of that (i.e. what exactly quantizes to a scale) is where I’m not getting it.

Also is the tape limit 6 minutes for recordings or is that the old firmware?

Thanks a lot to anyone who might know how to explain it!

I think it relates to the stretching/repitching side of it. Quantizing speed to a scale should deliver repitched sound only in intervals withing the selected scale.

Yes, it is now 30s with high quality. You can increase by lowering the speed of the tape but with a quality loss

Thanks. There was also another kind of straight from disc playback introduced with the big fw update as well, is that right?

Yes, there is no recording time limit with DISC device (related to available memory).

After playing (partly) the Q&A i heard some other interesting stuff that will come eventually to the S-4:

  • More devices and modulators (they didn’t say what, but that they have some prototypes allready(
  • Some way of opening the code to make user contributions possible (they didn’t say how, but i think the most obvious would be the possibility to add user contributed devices).
  • Improvements to TAPE and DISC devices

If you’re trying to read up on the S-4 I suggest using the live documentation website at:

There are some old PDFs manuals floating around on the web, but really I’ve found the format and current information in the documentation site much more useful learning my S-4

Are you saying that the PDF manual on the Torso site is not the current manual? Product aside, I don’t know much of them other than the complaints so I would not even begin to doubt it if that’s the case.

This is what I’ve been using, not sure if this is the same as what you linked but assumed it was ok.

Hope their new white hardware is 100% reliable so I can activate GAS for this one

Yeah that’s for FW 1.0.4

If you’re going to run the latest OS then the manual is now online and a lot more succinct.

Re: Quantize - think of it as the pattern of semitones that you move between when adjusting the parameter. So octaves would be steps of 12 semitones. Fifths steps of 7 & 12. Minor would be steps of 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10 etc.

Thanks. I guess that some people don’t want to run the new firmware so they have to keep the old literature up and I must have gone down the wrong rabbit hole.

Yeah, there is definitely an pre-2.0 crew keepin’ thing real out there

Well… i have to admit, since running the V2.02 update I haven’t experienced a single audio glitch/crackle or unwanted tick. Fingers crossed but for now it finally seems very stable. Also checked if there is any lowend loss but there isn’t. Edit: i gonna check this with proper analysis after reply’s on this one.The filter cuts some high end fully wet on default settings, but that’s no different behavior then the digitakt.

I know there’s a lot of (freeware) software out there already that can batch convert… but i build a small executable application to batch convert a source folder with every sub folder and wav files containing whatever bitrate and depth to a destination folder converting every WAV into 16Bit 48Khz WAV’s (as Torso advises) while keeping the original filenames and folderstructure. Window only for now. it seem to do the job as expected. If someone is interested. It’s free. Anyone who like try it? A simple interface with a source/destination selector, convert button and progress bar.

It’s really crazy how much low end I lose when Deform is enabled (even with everything set to 0), it’s night and day once it’s disabled. I don’t use it for low frequencies, but I hope this gets patched quickly.

But yeah, no crackles or pops on my side either, and I haven’t had a single crash or anything with this update.
