Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

I think competition is a good thing and torso created a very cool device with the s4. Elektron will hopefully learn from this device and implement something from it to their own magic shit.

I didn’t get the OT when it first came out, but I’m pretty sure it had its own bugs at first…and grew through the years.

I’ve never tried using the S4 with ableton by sending audio to it. Will try this evening.

Is it possible to record the 4 internal tracks to ableton?

Btw after months of use of the 2nd batch S4 and some bugs, I use it quiet a lot. I think the S4 once completed will stay in the music history like the OT.

I love mine, my applications are:

Guitar/Bass looper (using in/out jacks for pedal fx loop)
Texture/Sfx processor for ear candy
Drum destroyer (you can get really wild)

I didn’t try to expand it with a midi controller, will try

If you do can you play a simple beat in ableton or plsy the metronome and see if the s-4 syncs up with it?

And yeah 4 separate stereo tracks plus the full mix. Can also send the same out to torso from live.

I am eagerly waiting for them to release the official firmware, then buy it, then eagery wait for a new T-1 firmware

I’ve let OT/ST/DT sync the S4 to sample some loops (chopped guitars/bass, synths, and drums). On my unit, when I armed the track and recorded, I’ve noticed some lag (a few seconds) that can be trimmed - so I can confirm the 16th of a note that you had.

I suppose its related to OS and how it handles the sample rate - as this is related in daws with roundtrip latency.

Today I’ve processed some drums and let ableton sync the S4 to playback and clock and it was ok for what I was doing.

In the next days I will pull out a project on the S4 and print the tracks to ableton :grinning:

Hey guys, is there anyone that can add me in the Discord server? I’ve been using bets 2.14 for a while now and have some things to report, I just can’t find a current link! Why does it seem so hard to get into Discord servers sometimes?? Lol. I’d appreciate any help. Thank you.

Here you go:

Even invites that are supposed to persist sometimes expire! Super annoying when they have them on their websites

Just received a unit and experiencing this exact issue.

Has anyone else encountered? Silent on headphone in, horrible digital noise quite audible on line outputs. Individual track levels down, master levels and material levels down, makes no difference.

Disconnect from USB, does it go away?

mine was defective in the end - I had the choice of sending back to Torso for a repair or refund

I opted for a refund and I am glad I did.

I hope you can solve it soon but my recommendation would be to replace it with a new unit if you really want this machine

No USB is connected and I’ve tested multiple cables.
Projects don’t change anything, neither does power on/off.
Deactivated the Color/Deform across tracks, no effect.
Going to investigate changing firmware next.

S4 feedback test…
enable monitorng for tracks 1 and 2, send track 1 to track 2, send track 2 back to track 1 (slowly, i’m not responsible for damaging your own ears)
voila!

Those are some really good feedback tones @boorch

very nice, what sort of sounds are used as a source material? Or is it just self ā€œnoiseā€ that is feedbacking?

it’s a drone sample i created with ableton live wavetable. i start feeding track 2 back to track 1 slowly around 0:06 and on 0:12 it’s like -6dB where it really starts to be noticeable. track 1 already has plenty of stuff stuff going on (granular, filter with modulation, drive, delay/reverb etc), but track 2 also has a lowpass filter (no resonance) along with some distortion and delay/reverb as well.

I suggest you send it back and ask for a new unit
I did all the possible tests, changed cable, with and without usb, new firmware, , tried different cable (balanced-unbalanced) different mixer, swapped the power supply to a different outlet, updated firmware, reinstalled the firmware… but the noise was still audible and quite annoying - someone here on the forum said that they had the same noise and that it was normal…

The difference between headphones and line-out really stands out. The shop I bought it from have said to bring it in and we can compare to other units. Strangely updating to the beta did change the character of the noise but still present.
