Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

Hm, it was the power supply that came with the unit and its plugged directly into the wall.

Hey, I’m about to buy an S4 for live use, but I still have some questions:

can you safe all 4 tracks combined as a preset? Like a kit?

can you seamlessly switch between these kits while staying in Sync with the master clock from whatever device?

Right, if you had another DC12V ~2A center positive PSU to test with that’d be a pretty low risk option.

There is no notion of Kit … You can save 4 tracks as a Project/ Song…but changing projects , for now, is not really fluid ( not a thing that I’m doing a lot…). There’s a gap and a sound glitch( at least between my projects)

Seems like T1 was such a solid product, is it the difficulty from moving from a Midi to a more audio oriented product that was the challenge? Maybe some different engineering tasks involved…? Just speculating….

Can you safe a sample with all fx settings, like a sound on elektron machines?

Nope…you can save a recording as a bounced sample, or you can save a project with just one sample in one track with all the fx settings… no ā€˜elektron sounds’ notion… You can’t really think in the Elektron fluid way of doing things… The workflow is more…simple… You have a project with four tape tracks where you can apply some fx’s and a lot of modulation… you have no sequencer nor patterns…not a groovebox…more like a modern 4tapeloopcassette… as I see it… your project is the cassette with 4 tracks and you can’t chain cassettes, you must stop and change the tape… But as simple it seems, you can produce quite a nice soundscapes or tracks…assincronous loops… infinite sound on sound with different time and pitch on each track … hope it helps.

So it’s more like a sounddesign tool than something you would record/ prepare synthloops on for a liveset.

Thank you, I might look into something else then

Well, I’m preparing a live set, maybe just S4 and a Octatrack… It depends what you are looking for… I would say that for the music I want to do in this project, kind of quiet, dirty, noisy, ambient, field recording, some melodies, some improvised looping, granular glitch spacy soundscapes, the S4 it is a nice machine. For a more minimal techno groovy set, i would use my Rytm and the Digitone 2.

The S4 is (at the moment) a 4 track tape recorder with limited granular, quite a few other effects, available for each track.

Modulation parameters are abundant, it has no sequencer (I think within the goals of the machine it doesn’t need one).

These are the limitations and possibilities. If you’re looking for a digital version of a 4track recorder that you can manipulate live, within its limitations, this is your box. If not, there are other options.

Mine works fine, other people haven’t been so lucky. I hope that QA will improve.

People’s expectations of the supposed capabilities are their own, it is what it is, and beautifully so (for those with working units).

I just a couple of tracks of S4 with stochastic mod on oxi one and is absolutely fantastic. It shines with an external sequencer. I love this machine for ambient soundscapes, you can spend hours with it and I hope very soon to make a live performance.

New firmware?some news?:man_facepalming::rofl:

Yes, I had it and it happens to me often. The sad thing is that it damages the entire project and it is not suitable for reloading

Me too. Ruined four projects so far. Another thing is how it handles samples. It copies samples from the sample bank into the project, and they stay there - taking up much needed space in the drive. Seems like a strange form of sample handling. I’m used to the Digitakt, where the samples are in a pool per project. Saves space.

Beta 13 is out :content:

Boy, the new features will finally blow this thing out of the water. Can’t wait for a stable release ^^

Don’t sleep on it for a minimal techno/ rominimal-esque live set. The textural backgrounds you can get out of it + the insane tweakability (even more so with the perform & temp in beta) give tracks so much more body & depth.
