Tonverk: User Thread

I use mine live but can’t be of much help, I’m afraid. The only other thing I have onstage besides effects/mixer is my DNII and I don’t sync them at all, which has been pretty fun. I’ll mess with syncing the TV to other things once I see an update that sorts out the latency. I’m still enjoying as is though so I’m not sweating it

Plenty of us did buy one. We’re complaining a lot because it is blatantly unfinished and it’s frustrating to work with.

A bunch of the presets on my Tonwerk are bugged, incorrectly labelled or missing. Are others experiencing the same thing?

Details here.

Despite all the bugs, I honestly think Tonverk is the most exciting music device I’ve ever owned. Combined with my Octatrack, I’m just blown away by the possibilities. Can’t wait to see what comes with the new update.

I was just thinking that Tonverk paired with an OT might be a great combination, even in it’s current state.

Is anyone using Tonverk with the Octatrack for looping

What are your experiences?

I have to admit, the S4 and Tonverk combo works wonderfully live.

Took advantage of the buggy state because that means you can get B-stocks for prices that I’d expect to be used market prices in about a year already. I have trust again that they will fix it. And now that I own one, I guess I‘m allowed to complain :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:.

Only had about two hours with it so far, some first thoughts in case anyone’s interested:

  • Love the new form factor! OT was always a bit too big and digis too small, this is perfect.
  • Love that projects are now by default set to individual track length (and I think change after 16 and infinite length), which is always how I use it and now I don’t have to adjust that manually.
  • I keep hitting the sub tracks when I want to select one of the audio tracks 1-8
  • Navigation is generally a bit more challenging than expected, since even things like opening projects works a bit differently than on other Elektrons.
  • It’s daunting that there’s no print for the fct functions under the main page buttons for the first time. Makes sense since it would be too much, but ironically, TV is the first Elektron where I repeatedly try to actually read what’s written there
  • Not having bank printed on the machine is a strange omission
  • Having 256 steps is a gamechanger for me!
  • Step edit is a cool feature, but for a simpleton like me, it makes thing unnecessarily complicated (you highlight a trig and select a step value that then isn’t applied, you have to select each note in step edit to adjust lengths)
  • Really missing the temporary save and reload function of the digis. Haven’t tried/found the workaround that somebody posted here. Hope undo/redo are coming soon and work alright. If not, this might break it for me, since trying out thinks and reloading it it didn’t work or performing and reloading are crucial for how I use Elektrons. But maybe I just have to learn, perform mode might also work for that.
  • There’s definitely a feeling of “wait, am I doing things wrong or is this a bug?“ that I‘m not used to from Elektrons. Hopefully this will be over quickly with the next update(s).
  • Sub tracks, busses and multi sampling are great fun. There’s some great multi samples on board, but I‘d like to have a filter system like on other Elektrons, the way it is setup right now is already a bit too much and will become bad when autosampling works and I fill it with my own stuff.
  • Sound is incredible!
  • It’s fun thinking about all the different ways you can set it up and experiment. It’s really refreshing having something that feels so new and different from Elektron, I underestimated that. This should hopefully lead to some really fun experiments!
  • It would be a lot easier if every effect was just available at each level. I don’t like to remember which ones are only reserved for specific parts. Also definitely miss the variety of filters from DT II and a hi pass on busses.
  • This might be the most beautiful box ever that a music instrument was shipped in!

Would love to hear the performance!

and so too will my return window.

So I sent it back. The lack of communication has been a bit baffling for a new release in this state.

Quick question about USB cables and hubs:

I‘m having trouble starting USB disk mode. 3/4 times, it shows an error message. I did get it to work by connecting directly to my Mac with a third party cable I already have USB-C to USB-A (into an C to A adapter), but only 1/4 times. However, it’s not working at all so far when I plug that same cable into my USB hub that’s connected to my mac with the same USB-C to A connector. Always used the same output on TV (the one that’s not occupied by the one for power with the screw).

Is the Tonverk picky with cables or hubs or should I just try more often with the same configuration until it eventually works with the hub as well?

Try inserting the USB C connector the other way around. It makes a difference for me.

Oh thanks, maybe that made a difference, will try that!

You can really get lost in this thing.

I’m surprised, from our interactions I got the impression that you liked it.
If elektron loses @Snipecatcher there will be panic
Anyway, thanks for all the tips!

Can you point me to your original post again? I’m curious.

They made a few statements on here. It’ll be fixed in a week or two. Why bother.

The midi jitter to take the only significant source of complaint, the rest being very minor or simply features people think should be there but aren’t, was identified in hour one on release day. As it was known I’m tempted to say that anyone who bought one after that should ask themselves: Is it therefore my fault I have a device with a clock problem? Since the problem was already overshared and I wasn’t under duress to purchase one.

Wait, what?!

I have the TV connected to a new USB C hub, and even if I don’t like this solution very much, I have noticed that by turning on the TV after the computer, the disk mode activates without problems… so far

You can use the hi pass filters from the dirt shaper or warble FX on busses. No resonance, but if you really want to hi pass things for transitions, those two will do.

The manual recommends USB 2 for power and USB 1 for connecting to a computer. Maybe there’s your problem?
