Tonverk: User Thread

Feature request for sample editor, I’d love to fix levels after the sampling process.

I have some 0-Coast samples that blow my head off when previewing!

At the same time tonverk actually is a drum powerhouse.

You can load round robin multisampled analog drum machine kits. You can load velocity sensitivity round robin multisampled acoustic kits.

Digitakt and octatrack cannot do that. It gives you a degree of realism hard to achieve on those boxes. Jazz and rock drums on tonverk are entirely possible, as well as super realistic analog drum machine sounding eldrum kits that avoid that machinegun effect repetitive sample sounds.

You can do crazy stuff like slow velocity hit is closed hat and hi velocity hit is open hat from the same key/pad on your midi controller. Very playable.

And even just loading one shots, 8 kick one shots in subtrack 1, 8 snares in subtrack 2… etc. save that as a template and you could easily load one project with 8 subtracks containing 808, 606 707 909 linndrum, dmx pulsar, hexdrum samples for example and you have tons of fx which digitakt doesn’t. Just treat it as a dedicated drum machine sampler and it works pretty good like that.

Tonverks biggest problem is that it is 80% of the way to a full featured all in one device. Ppl really want it to be that but it won’t ever be without timestretch and more features like fx subtrack sends and allot of bug fixes

I feel the same, I’ve built some drum kits using round robin and velocity layers and now I have tons of drum samples or lots of variations of the same sound on tracks 1-4 within seconds. This means I don’t run into issues that people complain about with subtracks and can fully use TV’s FX powers. I feel like I can get a lot more out of four drum tracks this way than with more tracks on other (drum) machines. And then I still have four tracks of multisample goodness left.

Had never heard of Elin Piel…not sure if they’re here on Elektronauts but that set was great.

If you imagine that there’s no TV now and the Digis are on, say, v1.7 with new machines, new this and that — getting close to REALLY feeling complete (instead of kinda abandoned). In the shadows, Elektron’s other team works on TV only to shadowdrop it in a year relatively bug-free and feature-rich (but at the same time with clear potential for more).
We’d be at a place where the old platform is mature enough for people to feel closure and satisfaction, and that would also be a good moment for releasing something forward-thinking.

Currently, the Digis seem dead (we all know they WILL get updates, but that doesn’t change the fact they do feel abandoned for the time being), the TV is still buggy / more potential than actual muscle, and Elektron has to (it feels like) reshuffle their entire development cycle to triage the pretty botched launch.

Reason? Most realistically, Elektron had to release TV (because of money). That weird timing would also be supported by them later being acquired by the Bonkers thing.

I feel like the digis are already pretty much feature complete. Calling them “abandoned” requires you to focus on updates and not what’s already there.

The II’s released pretty fully featured, the only major thing missing from DT II was imporved slices, and they fixed that a long time ago. DN OG already felt pretty complete, and yet they added a ton of new features at launch, so I don’t know why it would need an update. ST recently got an update that introduced samples (!), something that most of were pretty sure for a long time would never come because it would eat into sampler sales. That update also brought a lot of quality of life features that bring it closer to the IIs.

I really don’t get this “abandonment” thing.

When something is done, it is done. If you let something that is done just be what it is, that’s not abandoning it, that’s called manufacturing an object. I mean, the manufacturer of my car did not just simply “abandon” it: they made it, and now it’s done so I can use it and we’re cool. If the thing does not break, I don’t need anything else from them: in exchange for the money I paid, now I have the object that I use. I don’t expect them to update it: it’s not a service, it’s an object.

I don’t think Elektron gear (or any music gear, for that matter) should be viewed all that differently.

I really don’t want to get into that discussion again (this time me starting it) but… I think there are two kinds of people on here. The ones who treat these boxes as “what you see is what you get” instruments that occasionally get new things, and those who treat them as evolving platforms they make music on. I’m in the latter group. And I don’t feel my group is more right than that other group. I actually feel both perceptions can coexist because none of us is right (until Elektron gives an interview on this and “takes a side”). Also, my post wasn’t about that at all :).

I come from the world of video games which are almost never the same when support ends as when they launched. Maybe this is influencing my perception. Elektron is helping though because adding stuff is their kinda their thing. This is not a piano or a violin. It’s a box with chips inside and it can be many things.

I used the word abandoned (maybe I should have said put on the side for now or smth like that?) because the evolution process halted to save TV’s launch and sales.

Cough werp, stretch etc. cough :))). Let’s not go into that rabbit hole :).

Yep. I think that’s particularly the case with the Tonverk as it is a Linux box (unlike the older devices) which, in theory, should give Elektron more scope to make fundamental changes to the TV over time.

I’m kind of halfway between the ‘what you see is what you get’ perspective and the ‘this thing will get better over time’ perspective. I don’t mind buying gear that isn’t fully finalised if my instinct is the company behind it will beaver away in the background and deliver the goods eventually.

It’s why I bought a Redshift6, for example, even though (when I bought it) on that synth there are labelled buttons on the box that literally displayed nothing apart from a “Coming Soon” message when you pressed them. I could tell from the way the Supercritical guys interacted with their customers on Discord that this was a small company seriously committed to doing the right thing… and, so far, they have delivered. The Redshift6 is fast becoming one of my favourite polysynths ever.

It’s also why I would only buy hardware from (say) Polyend or Native Instruments if the box in question, from day one, did exactly what I wanted it to do and I was confident I wouldn’t ever have to rely on those companies to update the thing in future to make it work. Zero trust there (IMO).

The bottom line is all the competition offers continuing updates and improvements so Elektron has to adopt this mentality. Even synths get firmware updates nowadays. It’s a product of technology, vendor competition and customer expectation.

Doesn’t matter how things used to be.

But yea the digits are feature complete so I don’t expect many updates, they are a second gen product on a mature platform. Hence they get fewer updates. I’m sure the Trinity will get an update this year for outbox support and some features that make sense.

The focus on tonverk has obviously been because it’s a buggy mess released early with half it’s features still in development and it’s actually unacceptable to leave something in that state. But the development teams are elektron are separate for the products to some degree

Question to all TV Users, what are currently the worst/most annoying bugs you encounter with it?
With the Wavefinder update it got my attention to be more a creative sample based synth/ sound exploration tool.

The range of comments on different platforms (youtube, Reddit…) of this device spans to “completely unusable, get stuck all the time , pots always glitching” to “didn’t encounter any major bugs”.

In my opinion, I wouldn’t call them all “errors.”
What bothers me most is the lack of consistency with other Elektron products. You would expect the behavior of macros, the file system, saving, etc., to be the same.
I really miss features like Kits, the ability to copy patterns to other projects, velocity and key-follow modulation options, more filter types for the track, a way to lock samples so they don’t get lost when reorganizing folders (like on the DTII), more MIDI and customization settings, portamento on polyphonic tracks, a fully realized multisampler and sub-tracks, routing send effects to other effects without extra cabling, saving MIDI CC assignments in presets, and Overbridge (which is on the way).
And what I need most is some communication from Elektron—when they plan to address these issues, or if we’ll ever get these features. They started off well when launching Tonverk by releasing statements about the problems they were tackling, but we’ve since returned to total silence.

Sorry it was late and I was tired.
I accidentally deleted the comment myself :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Thank you for the reply !

Little bugs here and there. Nothing holding you back from making music. Most complaints are just people wanting more features. Advice is to wait for the 1.4 update if you are on the fence then decide

The only bug I encounter, actually quite often and it is annoying, is that some factory drum kit patches do not load - I get a (random?) multisample instrument instead. I didn’t bother to analyze this more, I dont think the kits are that good anyway.
And, then the whole preset/patch feature is not really useful because there is no preview while browsing the list. And no category filtering.
So I just dont use presets or use them rarely, always start from scratch with sound design.
Other than that no issues, but I’m a basic “for fun” user - no live sets, no complex compositions, …

Same, it’s weird that they have presets with the filter tags you’d expect from Elektron but then no way to browse applying these filters. Which makes me think this feature will sooner or later be implemented.

I did start saving some presets though, because it means you can save things like filter, envelope, LFO, FX settings and macros. I’ve started to come up with default settings that I can then map to my Faderfox and internalize for performance. Otherwise, every project will be completely different and require a lot of work to perform or finish.
