Tonverk: Tips & Tricks

How are people doing live sets to get good mixes across patterns and transitions? I want to do a set on just my Tonverk in a couple of weeks and have been building around 40 min of music to play continuously that has a variety of BPM and rhythms and vibes so transitioning isn’t as simple as letting the kick keep rocking the whole time.

For normalizing volume across patterns I’ve started to map out a path that basically uses a compressor on the master of every pattern in a standard “limiter” kind of setting (max ratio, fastest possible attack and fairly short but nonzero release, threshold low enough to actually squash some transients but leave everything else. It feels a little wasteful or unimaginative to use the master FX sequencer this way but having all the patterns live in the same dynamic range seems more important to me.

For transitions I’ve started to set up a ‘loop template’ on track 8 of every pattern that is already volume adjusted with some overdrive and has a slow ramp attack, continuous loop mode, infinite release and a performance effect on deck. When I want to make the transition I record 4 or 8 bars (or free record) and assign it to that track, drop a single trigger to start it then remove it after starting. Once it ramps up I mute the other tracks and change pattern then start up the first sound(s) in that track, max the reverb/delay on the loop and drop its release to 127 then bring down the sends to crossfade into the new pattern.

Curious how others are doing it but so far this is what works the best for me.

Inspired by this (or the idea of it, I couldn’t watch the video, my internet says no to 4k), I made my own little tool to slice multiple breaks into a single multisample, though probably in different ways.

8 breaks, one per octave, 8 slices each + some extra reverse ones
velocity controls the slice length, max velocity plays until the end of the sample and then loops
lower velocity makes shorter and shorter loops for retrigger type effects

It uses 2 samples per break, just the original + a reverse copy of each (adds a bit of padding since it was throwing errors loading when the end points were close to the end of the sample)

how do you convert mp3 samples to wav, and what specific .wav works with the TV?

probably has been answered a bunch of times already but can’t find the answer anywhere.

i found a few .mp3 samples that i want to work with. tried converting them with adobe media encoder from .mp3 to .wav with 44.1khz but TV still says it’s an incompatible format.

anyone know’s a solution?

It has to be 48 khz 24 bit

There are a couple of ways. One would be to get the Audacity audio editor, load each sample, then Export as 48/24 WAV files. That is more time-consuming but would allow you to inspect each sample, fix any problems and normalise the levels as you go

If I had lots of samples I would use command line tools like FFMPEG in a script, but there’s a learning curve with that.

save you some time, don’t use MP3, seriously it’s pirated content usually and worst quality. You bought a highend sampler, take the time to find free quality packs or buy some good samples pack.

save you some time and stop talking from your high horse if you have no idea what you’re talking about. 99% of the stuff i use is proper .wav but some stuff is just not available in any other form

The filter used in the single player, multi player, and grainer machines is stereophonic, meaning it actually uses two filter instances. When you combine the filter’s SPRD parameter with a mid or high resonance value and route the signal to a bus track with stereo spread set to 0, you get two simultaneous resonance peaks in mono. This effectively acts like two parallel filters, which can produce interesting sonic results. You can further enhance this by incorporating filter key tracking, spread, and frequency modulation. While this process removes stereo information, you can still send the signal to stereo send effects from the bus track.

I’ve been doing this quite a bit, using lots of stereo filtering and effects like phase98/comb filter, then using a buss for reducing the width, you can get some very interesting effects.

To fine tune drum slices on Subtrack machines (or Single Player machines in MONO mode):

  • Enable RTRG and set the RTIM to 1/80
  • Hold down the key/drum button and adjust the sample start back until you hear silence
  • Now adjust it slowly forward until you hear a click.
  • Congratulations, you found the transient!
  • Disable RTRG and off you go

(Also works with P-Locks! Just hold the trig and YES)
