The Models’ interface is optimised somewhat differently to the Digis, more knob-per-function and a bit more straightforward to jam with. It’s not quite as simple as them being just a entry point to the Elektron workflow IMO, I’d really like to see the concept get revisted in a more mid-range box but I dunno if Elektron would do that.
think about it that way using Thomann as a reference:
The m:c is sold for 299-350 euros. It is currenly sitting at the 9th position in sales rank for drum machines.
The DT2 is sold for 999 euros and currently sitting at 1st position in sales rank for samplers.
The syntakt is sold for 999 euros and currently sitting 2nd position in sales rank for drum machines.
The model:samples is sold for 299-350 euros and currently sitting 23rd position in sales rank for drum machines.
The M:C and the M:S internal components are very close to what you could find in the DT1 which was also a best seller and had a much higher price point.
This is not to say that they are a bad product, I would say they are quite close to perfect for the form factor/price/workflow, but they are probably much less profitables than the digiboxes (except the DN maybe which also didnt get anywhere the same amount of love as the syn/digitakt)
What do you think is giving Elektron more profits?
It is not even close unfortunately. I assume that is why their development been cut short, though because Elektron is not opened to talk about them it is a bit hard to know the how and why.
5 years post launch you’d think it would be self-explanatory where the cards fall. Yet we continue to have the same fruitless conversation over and over. I don’t think Elektron has to “officially” say anything. Find me another manufacturer with a similar portfolio of products who communicates those kinds of things.
None of this reads to me as “fully formed” instrument talk. Looks more like someone had plans/ideas for updates and these were cut short/cancelled.
Anyways the point isnt to talk about the models, but why Elektron might not get back to budget portable instruments: they don’t need to. They have some of the higher priced grooveboxes you can find in the market and are still top seller over Korg/Roland/Yamaha (which are way bigger than a boutique company like Elektron mind you) and even Teenage engineering similar products.
Teenage engineering? You got an open thread in this very forum with TE David talking with customers about features/issues with the KO II openly…
I don’t agree that Teenage Engineering has instruments in the same class as Elektron. By and large they target either entry level or boutique audiences; or non-instruments altogether. Elektron is spread over what most would consider entry level, mid range, and high end instruments. The dev focus is around the mid range and high end products that have room for expansion and developers standing behind them. I really don’t see what is unfathomable about that concept. Entry level pocket operators are shipped and done. Teenage Engineering is communicating about unreleased KOII features they are planning to add? Because I don’t see it.
Again, the writing is on the wall and it’s easy to come to educated conclusions as to why something happens and why something doesn’t.
No, those read as a series of questions that Ess answered very noncommittally, and was clearly being careful not to suggest that anything can or will be added/updated, even if those suggested updates may be deemed desirable. In one of your carefully selected examples he even literally says ‘can’t make any promises’. Literally, right there.
by that logic though, why would they have made it updatable, they must have given themselves the possibility which in turn gave us the possibility of expectancy… does that make sense?
I think there is a difference between being hopeful and Entitled, and making music is such a passionate endeavor it’s probably easy to misinterpret between the two sometimes, I’d give any of you guys the benefit of the doubt first before I clown you
why?
what’s really ruined?
did anyone not buy DT2 because it wasn’t a surprise?
honest mistake, shit happens, but so what?
I still waited for the launch stream, so are many others, and it was sold out within hours…
it’s not like someone intentionally leaked info, the thingy showed up on google, how is that “curious users” fault? no need to blame anyone and really no need to feel bad about anything, shit happens, hopefully lesson learned - protect private pages, next one will be a surprise
we are all emotional about something, and all creatures of habit to an extent… try not to take it too seriously as there are alot of people here who wouldn’t mind discussing the model series with you in this regard at all, and some not so much but either way it’s really ok… we can’t agree on everything that would be super boring
for every hill we have to run for there is always a valley on the other side, or some sh*t like that lol
i think so too haha, at least the bugs are rooting for us!
I swear I wanted to send a bottle of wine to whomever put that chance knob on there and i don’t even drink, but just to say thank you
I know DT and ST both outperform the M:C. In rankings I think it is about money moved, not items sold. So a 30.000 product needs to sell a lot less. Even knowing that ST and DT do great. But M:C is really not doing that bad, yet it seems like Elektron has left that station for good (no new battery handle, zero firmware updates which is are what Elektron is known for). That’s just a headscratcher for me.
100% right on this. I would bet that they are probably also done with the DN and the tonwerk would replace it. Last “minor” update was more than 2 years ago…
I think its likely quite simple. Software development requires a substantial commitment of resources. Elektron may have just decided that those resources are better used on a different product.
We can honestly use this statement for the Tonverk.
The most logical next step for Elektron is a new modern take on a polyphonic synth, since DT2 handles sampling and drum machine and Syntakt handles monophonic synth and drum machine.
