Tip: Sample Banks on the Rytm

I just wanted to share a small workflow trick, because I see so many sample chains for the AR in the downloads section (which is great!) but using separate samples for each sound is still easier to handle on the Rytm:

The Rytm has just 128 sample slots but 1 gigabyte of sample storage space on the +Drive. You can create folders as you like. That’s what we all know.

How can you combine that? Create several folders on the +Drive named as “Sample Bank 1”, “Sample Bank 2” etc. containing up to 128 samples with a certain degree of standardization and alphabetic ordering (details see below). If your done with the currently loaded samples and want to use other samples, go to the sample manager (maybe even during a live set when the sequencer is running!), select all samples in RAM, unload, select all samples in the next folder on the +Drive, load. That’s it, easy and straight-forward, and it gives you access to a large amount of samples, not just 128!

I use/recommend the following structure:
01_BD
02_SD
03_RS
04_CP
05_Bass or 05_SCWF
06_Syn
07_Pad
08_Voc
09_CH
10_OH
11_RC
12_CC
… each containing 8 sounds. --> 96 samples, so there’s still space for something outside of the standardized structure.

Just create folders with these tags on your computer, drag and drop samples into the folders and use a batch processing tool such as “Joe” to add the folder name to the file name (e.g., “filename.wav” --> “01_BD_filename.wav”) as base for the alphabetic ordering.

Voila.

P.S. I called it “Sample Banks” in reference to the MD, where I used a very similar procedure to organize and switch through a large amount of samples. Switching sample banks is not as simple on the AR as on the MD (which has a button combo for this), but on the other hand it’s more flexible. You can, for instance, easily replace the 8 basses by 8 vocals from another folder while the set is running.
