Time saving slicing/Multi sample

I’m looking to get an Octatrack. Maybe strange timing based on the Digitakt 2. Anyhow, one of the things I’m looking forward to doing is using slices more for melodic/harmonic purposes than anything. As in, I have a chopped audio file made up of C major scale of chords, CMaj, Dm Em etc.

Is there a way to quickly load up a chopped file of those chords so that the first degree of the scale is already on the first pad, 2nd degree on the 2nd pad, 6th degree on the 6th pad, etc.?

Or do I need to load an audio file and chop it up every time?

thank you!

You could use something like Octachainer or DigiChain to make sample chains pretty quickly. Those can be pre-sliced so when you load them up they’ll be ready to go.

You could also set up quantised recording on the OT itself to record a series of chords into 8/16/32/64 parts if you’re synced up or are using the MIDI tracks to send chords out and getting the audio back in.

No. Use octachainer as described above. Makes sample chains for you, super fast. Then drag and drop the file onto your OT.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Looking at that website it creates an .OT file with the metadata for a slice/chain. Are you able to save a slice chain in the octatrack as a file you can select in other projects, or is it just embedded in the project file and inaccessible?

As in, I don’t mind sampling and slicing on the hardware, that actually appeals to me. But I would want to save my slicing as something i can load up as a pre-baked thing over and over. Do I need octachainer for that?

You can do both.
Slices are saved as part of the sample data in an .ot file.

Thats is done when you save sample attributes in the OT.

Octachainer generates an .ot file.

Awesome, thank you!

Last question, can you do chains with static tracks or do they have to be flex tracks?

Thank you.

Maybe this video could help you a bit

Thanks, I did watch this, it looks like there is the option to “assign to static”? Anyone have insight on if that works well?

you can slice static slots exactly the same as flex slots

The only thing to be mindful of when using statics (streamed from card) is they are not as responsive as flex (ram) samples when wanting to do rapid start or slice point selection, it is in the manual about the limitations. In practice for most usual use case scenarios they are fine, but if you want rapid start point/slice manipulation eg scene or LFO mangling of start point type stuff, use flex.

FWIW I’ve found working with static files to be near flawless in terms of rapid slot/slice selection. I do have what I think is the best CF card you can get though.

You can do both. Flex machines have a more fully featured audio editor.

Flex play back vs Static play back can be different in some scenarios. As described in manual. May affect some users more than others depending on the nature of what you’re doing.
