Tidy cables? how the hell

Maybe you can get some inspiration from the cable pros on Reddit Cable Porn.

A google search for the various cable management reddits might help too, especially the Desk Cable Management reddit.

Good luck!

The last attempt to tidy ended with the whole lot unplugged

Wait until the pile is 20x that size :sob:

i use elastic bands to keep cables and psu’s (with attached plugs and cables) tidy.
very cheap, works very well.

plus a dymo label printer so i know which plug & psu is for which device.

I might be weird, but I really enjoy tidying cables. 2-3 times a year I pull all my cables out, wipe them down, test them, and reinstall them. There is something meditative about it, wrapping them all, throwing out old ones…

a couple years back we finished a previously unfinished room in our house that is now my studio space. when I went to transfer everything over from the old room I was using, I unplugged all power/midi/audio cables and threw 'em into a pile on the floor. my wife was literally nauseous just looking at it all.

Goes without saying to be careful with when coiling cables if you’re bunching them up to keep them tidy - you don’t want to over-strain the conductors or weaken the connectors, reducing the useful life of them.

With powered cables there might also be interference/heat considerations.

Does anyone have any experience using a “cable box” with audio cables re diameter of the cables? I have most of my cables rolled up into a pile but man is it unsightly.

  1. Get a desk with proper cable management.
  2. Use cables the correct length (as short as possible)
  3. Get a switched power distribution unit so you don’t have a trillion plugs everywhere.
  4. Consider the amount of cables required when buying gear.
  5. Don’t buy too much gear and cram it into one spot.
  6. Consider whether right angle or straight cables are best in each situation.

  1. get coloured cables, they are more easily identifiable if you do it right and look better.

i second this. it solved 80% of my cable management.
i made commutations once and for nearest ever.

naturally, i’ve got to have separate cable set for gigs, but it’s worth it.
